WHEN I WROTE MY BOOK ABOUT MY VERY FIRST WESTPAC CRUISE TO VIETNAM FROM DECEMBER 7, 1964 TO NOVEMBER 1, 1965 I USED THIS BOOK FOR MY REFERENCE SINCE I WAS ABOARD THE U.S.S. CORAL SEA CVA-43 WHICH THE BOOK USES AS A REFERENCE FOR SPENDING THE LONGEST CRUISE TO WESTPAC SINCE THE KOREAN WAR 331 DAYS LONG. THE DATE WAS VERY SIGNIFICANCE SINCE IT WAS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF PEARL HARBOR ON DECEMBER 7TH, 1941 JUST BEFORE 0800 AND 23 YEARS LATER THE U.S.S. CORAL SEA CVA-43 LEAVES NAS ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA ON THE VERY SAME DATE AT 0800. BUT THE MOST IRONIC THING ABOUT THAT WHOLE CRUISE IS THAT EXACTLY TWO MONTHS LATER ON A SUNDAY FEBRUARY 7TH 1965 THE CORAL SEA, HANCOCK AND RANGER MAKE RETALIATORIES AIR STRIKES ON NORTH VIETNAM IN THE TONKIN GULF WHICH MADE US EXCLUSIVE MEMBERS OF THE TONKIN GULF YACHT CLUB WHERE WE MADE AIR STRIKES LIKE THERE WERE NO TOMORROW.
THE BOOK THAT I WROTE WAS FROM THE VIEW OF A YOUNG AIRMAN WHO DROPPED OUT OF AVIATION ELECTRICIAN MATE "A" SCHOOL TO GO TO HIS VERY FIRST SHIP ON THE WEST COAST TO BE A FLEET SAILOR GOING ON A PEACETIME WESTPAC CRUISE TO THE FAR EAST WITH LOTS OF PORTS-OF-CALLS WITH TWO WEEKS AT SEA BETWEEN EACH PORT WHICH NEVER HAPPEN SINCE WE WERE THROWN INTO THE VIETNAM WAR. MY BOOK ISN'T PUBLISHED YET BUT IF YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CARRIER OPERATIONS IN THE TONKIN GULF DURING VIETNAM THIS IS THE BOOK TO READ THAT WILL GIVE YOU ALL THE INFORMATION NEEDED TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT WE WENT THROUGH BACK THEN BESIDES BEING ON AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER YOURSELF. The book is a little pricy BUT it is THE reference book on Navy Aviation during the
Viet Nam War. The quality of the photographs is excellent. The volume of statistics is without parallel in any reference. Francillon is tops.

A rare book but for historian and statistics buffs

Very rare book. Used in many other books as a reference.
But it's not easily readable. A history book more than anything, with a big focus on USS Coral Sea cruises in SEA.
