About the Author
Arnold Tubis is a retired physics professor who was a faculty member at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana from 1960 to 2000 (nine years as department head). He now lives in Carlsbad, California. Origami has been an avocation of his since the early 1960s and his models have been exhibited in the USA, Japan, Europe, and Israel. He is the co-author of "Decorative Origami Boxes from Single Squares" (with Leon Brown, British Origami Society, 2003), "Unfolding Mathematics with Origami Boxes" (with Crystal Elaine Mills, Key Curriculum Press, 2006), "Fun with Folded Fabric Boxes" (with Crystal Elaine Mills, C&T Publications, 2007), and author of "Tipping with Origami Money Folds" (CreateSpace.com, 2013). He has also authored or co-authored over 15 papers on origami in K-12 mathematics education. He is currently focused on designing models that require at most an intermediate folding-skill level, and can be used to enrich the teaching of geometry in middle school and high school. He is currently the coordinator of the Greater San Diego Origami Group. Diana Lee started folding paper at the early age of four years. Her first folded model was the classic waterbomb. This was soon followed by the flapping bird and peace crane. Thanks for the gift of knowledge and beauty!

This book met and exceeded my expectations for learning technique, as it gave me several 'Aha!' moments to fill in my understanding of origami concepts. I consider myself an intermediate level folder and was able to create my own fold pattern on my second box lid.
One thing I love about origami in general is that simple folds can result in really fantastically ornate designs - this technique explores that in spades!!The only drawback I encountered was that for several of the models, a dark gray paper was used in the instructions which makes it challenging to understand where to make folds in some cases. Looking ahead does help some, but those photos are dark as well.
Another issue is that in the Kindle version, some pages near the front of the book appear to be missing.
Overall, I'm glad to have this book in my library!

Look like fun projects to make but will take some time.

Haven't had a chance to do any of the projects yet, but looked through the book thoroughly. These look like fun projects to make but will definitely take some time and practice. I was looking for some projects I could make for the kids I tutor, but I will need to perfect my technique first before I attempt to make a lot of them for the kids.

Rifaat Ebied is Foundation Professor of Semitic Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia. He has published extensively in the field of Semitic Studies generally and on Christian Arabic and Syriac studies in particular, most recently Petri Callinicensis Patriarchae Antiocheni: Tractatus Contra Damianum (Louvain 1994/1996/1998/2003).

This volume comprises an Arabic edition with English translation of the Arabic response made by Damascene Islamic scholar Shams Ibn Ab� T�lib, a fourteenth century 'faquih', in response to a provocative letter from 'across Mediterrenian' Cypriot Christians. In his Letter, the Cypriot Christian eludes that the Qur'an does not contradict, but in fact affirms the Christian religion and its basic doctrines. the Moslem scholar elaborates in his comprehensive reply, in detailed and wide-ranging themes, rewriting earlier familiar polemical works, in a reply to Christian's letter, which was also sent to Ibn Taymiyya, a controversial Islamic contemporary. This response is thus a parallel to Ibn Taymiyya's (Al-jaw�b al-sah�h)*.

Note on Master of Jihad:

In his original book, (Aljawaab AlSaheeh)*;'The Correct Answer,' Ibn Tayymiya elaborated an encyclopedic answer,in 7 volumes, to many Christian polemics. Ibn Taymiyya (1263-1328), well versed in Qur'anic studies, and scholastic theology, started giving fatwas on religious legal matters without following any of the four traditional legal schools, influenced by Ibn Hanbal. He was unyielding in his political and religious positions.

His jihad against the enemies of Islam, which he is now best known for, did not help him in his times, and he died in jail because of his daring opinions. Most notably, the Ibn Taymiyya writings were incorporated into Wahhabi doctrine in order to legitimize fighting anti-Islam as holy Jihad.

About the Author
Ji Cheng, born in 1579, was a practicing garden designer in the first half of the 17th century. He designed gardens for several well-known individuals in the late Ming Dynasty, who supported the original publication of this book, summing up his life's work and experience.

Alison Hardie, a graduate of Oxford and Edinburgh Universities, began to translate The Craft of Gardens when she was working for the Hong Kong trading firm Jardine Matheson, in the 1980s. Later she wrote her doctoral thesis on Chinese garden design in the late Ming, and is now a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Leeds. She is internationally known as a scholar of Chinese garden history.

Zhong Ming, who took the photographs for The Craft of Gardens, is an artist whose work has been exhibited in many countries including China, France, the UK, Japan, and Sweden. He trained as an oil painter and first came to prominence as China opened up after the Cultural Revolution, his portrait of the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre causing a sensation in 1979. He now divides his time between China, France and the UK.

Maggie Keswick, who originally inspired and supported this translation of The Craft of Gardens, grew up in Shanghai and Hong Kong, where her father ran the trading company Jardine Matheson. Based on her personal experience of traditional Chinese gardens, she published The Chinese Garden: History, Art and Architecture in 1978; it remains an indispensable introduction to the subject.

About the Author

Paul G. Hewitt

Former silver-medal boxing champion, sign painter, uranium prospector, and soldier, Paul began college at the age of 27, with the help of the GI Bill. He pioneered the conceptual approach to teaching physics at the City College of San Francisco. He has taught as a guest teacher at various middle schools and high schools, the University of California at both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses, and the University of Hawaii at both the Manoa and Hilo campuses. He also taught for 20 years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which honored him with its Outstanding Educator Award in 2000. He is the author of Conceptual Physics and a co-author of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with John Suchocki and Leslie Hewitt).

Simple to Use, Fun to Read!

Pros: Simple to Use, Diagrams, Quizzes, Answers in Back

Cons: Not much explanation in mathematics.

Rented book to use in a Conceptual Physics course and love it! I was dreading physics but with a good professor and an easy to read book, with many diagrams, pictures, and explanations, physics was made much easier! I would recommend this book to those interested in physics to gain a basic understanding of physics.

General physics primer

If you want to learn about physics, this is the book for you. It's all here, in plain English. Starts off pretty simple, and you might think you already know it. Trust me, review the material in the terms in which it's presented. Later on, when you get to more complex subjects like magnetism, you'll be glad you took the time to study simple acceleration.
The cartoonish illustrations are quite helpful and the photo examples featuring friends, family, students, and luminaries of the field are quite endearing. So not only does this book cover a lot of ground, it has a personal touch that makes the material quite approachable.

Necessary information presented in understandable manner

Necessary information presented with many pictures and graphs. We used it for a basic introductory class. I needed to reread some paragraphs, but basically understandable, good practice problems at end of each chapter.
