I needed a quick intro: this fit the bill

I requested a review copy because we're involved in a complicated construction project that seems to keep getting bigger and hairier. While this book was overkill for my needs it did give me a start in several key areas that were causing our insurer fits and made it much easier to discuss the important points with the attorneys and our builder: I ended up knowing more than he did. This book is NOT intended for laymen but even for us it's a great way to get up to speed.

If you have ever wondered about the details of how a construction project is handled with contracts, this book is a straightforward and non-legalistic read. Given the amount of money involved in most projects, it is not surprising that many guidelines and legal cases have arisen over the many stages of involvement.

This starts with a lender considering making a loan to an owner of a property site, where the owner wants to use the loan to hire a contractor to build on the site. A common precaution from the standpoint of the lender is to require that it approves the owner's contracts with the contractor and the architect. One consideration is how the lender's loan stands in relation to any other creditors that the owner might have, where in practice the owner will indeed have those creditors.

One recent trend discussed is that a building qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design [LEED]. An owner might require that the contractor build to that specification. The book refrains from delving into whether this makes economic sense, leaving that to the judgment of specific projects and the assessment by an owner.

Unsurprisingly, scheduling of the project is another major topic of the book. A project would initially draw up a schedule. Then periodically the actual stages reached in the project are compared to this timeline. The idea of resource levelling is raised. Where it is usually desirable to maintain a constant level of material and labour usage throughout the project, as being more efficient than having some periods of high usage.

Without a doubt, the BEST law book I've ever read. This is right up there with Ed McGovern on international trade law. The writing is clear; the taxonomy inspired. Author takes a complex subject, breaks it down into logical pieces and explains the interplay of federal and state law illustrating throughout with controlling legal decisions. Tricky distinctions between legal doctrines, such as quantum meruit, unjust enrichment and betterment, are lucidly explained. I finally understand what's behind the ambiguity in judgments concerning economic loss recovery. This is a must-read for anyone puzzling over U.S. law particularly U.S. contract law - a must-read for all of us who are struggling with epidemic building failure, such as B.C.'s ongoing leaky condo crisis, and the multitude of construction defects post-completion that seems to be the new normal in construction practice. This book reveals the tensions between owners, architects/engineers, builders and insurers all of which makes one wonder how anything ever gets built today.

interesting, but hard to trust

I was intrigued for reading this book for several years after seeing it referenced in other works. An entire book devoted to a woman's cycle. Should be fascinating.�

And maybe it is. But when a supposedly scholarly work is put together by a couple of poets it's difficult to sort out actual ideas from pretty writing. This book has been described as heavy, but I think there's a fair amount of fluff as well, particularly when horror movies are analyzed for menstrual meaning.�

Which leads to the question of how much of this information is much beyond circumstantial. Much is a discussion of Freud and Jung, which is all well and good, but over assumption of archaeological findings makes for disbelief. When every other concept ends with "we don't have proof" its hard to take much without a Grain of salt. Clearly Shuttle wants to derive meaning but goes too far in assumption.�

What I see has being the drawing feature is the feminist nature of the book, so more rah rah than informative (aside from the archetype sections. ) even so I ended the book not quite sure of what any of it was supposed to mean.

Better than I expected

Better than I expected. A lot of people seem to hate these stories, but I'm interested in the Eldar so I decided to give them a chance anyway.

For reference, the only other 40k books I've read are Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain novels.

I didn't think these were that bad. Not the best thing I've ever read, but entertaining enough for a light read. And it was fun to read a bit about characters in various aspects of Eldar culture.

Great sleep aid

I think Mrs Thorpe wrote this one. The Eldar books I have read so far show them to be savage entities who kill and torture to rejoice in the suffering it brings. This starts out as a story of unrequited love that causes a craftworld eldar to change from sculptor to warrior. In the first 182 pages he manages to kill ONE ork and get severly wounded, then goes off the deep end to become a leader of warriors? Not the shoot em up, bang, bang typical of Warhammer books. I read when I go to bed at night to decompress and relax. No problem putting this book down when ready to sleep.

I love this book, we ordered it for our children to help them understand what their foster brother would be like. Explaining things can be hard sometimes and this book hit it right on the dot. Would recommend this for anyone just because it makes autism easier to understand for children.

Amazing Book

I work as a Mental Health Counselor and have used this book during therapy to help families with children who have been diagnosed with autism. It is great to see yonug kids work hard towards educating others about Autism. I wish Sarah best of luck on all her future goals and dreams.

The Lincoln Studies Center is currently retained by the Library of Congress to transcribe and annotate documents in its Lincoln Papers for the World Wide Web. Another gem from Douglas Wilson

I'll admit, I'm a little biased toward the work of Douglas Wilson. I think he's done as much to forward the study of Lincoln's early life than almost anyone so I enjoy and appreciate all his projects. This book, obivously, grew from his study of William Herndon's informants. Wilson offers thoughtfull essays on a wide variety of subjects pertaining to the pre-presidential Lincoln. Some is completely new, some expands on some well-known material. In the end though, Wilson, presents his material in a very readable way that had me, anyway, looking at Lincoln from another perspective. That, to me, is what historical research should accomplish.
