Here’s a pop quiz for you. When eaten in large amounts, which macronutrient raises your blood levels of saturated fats and triglycerides: protein, fat, or carbohydrate? In the last four decades, the percentage of overweight American adults and children has ballooned. As Albert Einstein once remarked, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results.” In this time frame, the medical and nutritional establishment has told us to follow the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Guide Pyramid, skimp on calories, avoid fat, and focus on eating carbohydrate foods. Americans now consume less saturated fat than they did forty years ago but have replaced those calories—and added another 200 a day—with carbohydrates. Clearly, something is seriously wrong with the way we eat.

So has our population become thinner? Quite the contrary! Today, more than 65 percent of American adults are overweight. Likewise, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has skyrocketed. Fine for Vegetarians

Over the decade that I have been a vegetarian, my weight has ballooned. About two weeks ago a friend who has been an avid Atkins follower told me that I could join her on Atkins. Now that I have read this book I realize why I couldn't lose weight before. I was eating so many "empty" carbs as bread, cereal, pasta, rice, potatoes, chips, and other snack foods plus lots and lots of fruit that I was never giving my body the chance to burn its own fat. In the two weeks that I have been following the vegetarian version of Atkins, I have already lost 5 pounds. Just as important, my constant hunger has disappeared. It sounds strange but I am actually eating more vegetables than I was before. It's good to know that I can feel good about what I eat and have my body feel good too.

A whole new world..........!

OK, here's the deal for me. In September I realized I needed to lose around 50 pounds. I went for the low-fat, whole grain, portion control approach; and stuck to it pretty well. In more than seven months I lost 17 pounds and was miserable and frustrated the entire time. In less than two weeks on Atkins, I have lost 8 pounds, and have never felt deprived!

I am in a situation where I end up eating out a lot. With my other diet, this just made me feel more frustrated. But on this plan, I feel like I can stick with it anywhere. If I'm in a high end place, it's all about the meat/fish and veggies anyway. And if it's a burger joint, I just skip the bun and the fries! The sodium doesn't seem to be an issue, surprisingly.

For breakfast I have been making 2 egg omlettes with frozen veggies and cheese. Lunch is usually tuna or chicken salad on a bunch of greens/veggies. Dinner is some kind of grilled or broiled meet with asparagus etc. (I throw on some rice pilaf etc. for the rest of the family). I went to Whole Foods today and saw the "prepared foods" section with a whole new eye! I didn't even want to stare at the pizza!

One of the things that appealed to me most was that exercise is not a core part of this plan. I have a permanent disabling injury that prevents me from just about anything (beyond WII!). It was refreshing to not feel stigmatized for that.

And I'm even cheating! Shoot me but I really enjoy a glass of wine when I'm done with my day, (or at least my driving). Generally an hour or so before I eat. I've kept that for my sanity the safety of my family. (It's only 4 to 5 carbs!) So I still have around 20 pounds to go. Which no longer sounds so daunting.

Just losing 8 pounds feels great!

I respect other people's right to choose, and right to write more mainstream diet books. And I hope that they will respect that I feel like I finally caught a break here!

A Worthy Successor to Atkins, Valuable New Stuff

Having eaten a low carb diet for nearly fifteen years now, (spending much of my time coming up with low carb recipes 1001 Low-Carb Recipes: Hundreds of Delicious Recipes from Dinner to Dessert That Let You Live Your Low-Carb Lifestyle and Never Look Back) with nothing but great health to show for it, I'm a huge fan of Dr. Atkins. Having met Dr. Eric Westman, and followed his research for the past several years, I'm a huge fan of his, too. New Atkins For a New You is a more than worthy successor to Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.

How does New Atkins For A New You differ from DANDR?

* They've lost the focus on ketosis. Oh, you'll still go into ketosis if you eat the way they tell you, and that's a good thing -- it means you're running a fat-burning rather than a glucose-burning metabolism. It also feels great -- high energy, suppressed appetite, and a clear head. Great mood, too; ketosis makes me ebullient. But there's no peeing on ketostix. Ketostix told people less than they thought: They can tell you that you're burning fat, but they can't tell you if you're burning fat you just ate, or fat from your storage depots. And ketostix are expensive. Some people do find "turning purple" motivating, but this is a useful simplification.

* They've incorporated the net carbs concept, as pioneered by Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades, instructing people to subtract fiber grams from total grams of carbohydrate. This makes for more vegetables from the get-go,since quite a lot of the carbohydrate in vegetables is in the form of fiber. Also makes for a little more fruit and possibly a little whole grain in the later stages of the diet. Most low carbers were already doing this, but since DANDR was published before the Eades wrote Protein Power, it wasn't "in the book." It is now. They've also expanded the list of vegetables allowed on "Induction," the super-low-carb introductory phase.

* They've added sodium, in the form of broth, soy sauce, or a few other options. Because dropping insulin levels drastically, as a low carb diet does, enables the body to properly excrete sodium, they found some people were feeling washed out, or even light-headed. Adding sodium fixes the problem. (Also keep in mind that by knocking out the vast majority of processed foods, the diet eliminates a big whack of the sodium in the Standard American Diet.

* They allow caffeine. Woo-hoo! (I'm betting this was the most-violated Atkins no-no.) Say that the research says caffeine aids fat burning and is perfectly healthy stuff, and anyway tea and coffee are loaded with antioxidants. She said with a cup of tea in front of her.

* Also alcohol in moderation after the Induction phase.

* They include vegetarian options. This is the only part of the new version about which I have mixed feelings. The vegetarian options are heavy on the soy products, and I'm completely un-sold on the benefits of soy. OTOH, I know for certain that being fat and running high insulin levels is deadly. I would personally urge vegetarians to rely more heavily on eggs and cheese, and have been forthright in stating that I don't consider veganism to be nutritionally adequate. But if this is what it takes to get vegetarians lower their carb intake, that's a good thing. I've known too many long-time vegetarians who have found themselves in pre-diabetes or even full-blown diabetes.

* Perhaps most important, Drs. Westman, Volek, and Phinney cover the multitudinous research demonstrating the many health benefits of carbohydrate restriction that has happened since DANDR was written. If you haven't been keeping up, you'll be impressed as heck.

This is the best-of-breed of the low carbohydrate diet books to come out in the past decade. Buy it. Read it.

About the Author
Teresa Amabile is a professor of Business Administration and a Director of Research at Harvard Business School. The author of numerous articles and books, including Creativity in Context, she has long studied creativity, motivation, and performance in the workplace.

Steven Kramer is a developmental psychologist and has co-authored a number of articles in leading management periodicals, including Harvard Business Review and the Academy of Management Journal.

Ground-breaking research that shatters the conventional wisdom of what truly motivates workers.

The researchers themselves never saw it coming. When Teresa Amabile of the Harvard Business School and her husband developmental psychologist Steven Kramer decided to collaborate on a study exploring worker creativity through the eyes of those in the trenches who actually perform the work they simply had no idea of the secrets they were about to unlock. Typically, studies are done exploring topics like employee productivity and creativity from the point of view of upper management. The methodology that Amabile and Kramer chose to employ for this project would prove to be a bit unconventional to say the least. The authors were primarily interested in determining exactly what it is that motivates top performers. They were able to recruit 238 people from 26 project teams in 7 companies in 3 different industries. The participants were professionals whose work required them to solve complex problems creatively. What made this study truly unique was that at the end of each workday the participants were e-mailed a diary form that included several questions about their work experiences on that particular day. Much to the authors' surprise an overwhelming majority of the participants responded on a daily basis. Furthermore, they recorded their experiences and impressions in a far more candid way than expected. Amabile and Kramer had unwittingly stumbled upon a previously unexplored world. The insights that they gained from this remarkable undertaking is the subject of their new book "The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work". Many business books can be rather dry and a chore to read. But much to my surprise this book was different. I simply could not put it down.

If you are a manager or team leader seeking optimum performance from the people you oversee then listen up. Conventional wisdom would have you believe that it is primarily things like salaries and benefits, bonuses and recognition programs that motivate individuals. While these are certainly important the authors unearthed the fact that what matters most to employees is what they dub the "inner work life". Amabile and Kramer define inner work life as "the confluence of perceptions, emotions, and motivations that individuals experience as they react to and make sense of the events of their workday". In the 12,000 diary reports submitted for this study the authors discovered that they possessed a veritable goldmine of information. They had real-time access to the workday experiences of lots of people in a variety of different departments and organizations over an extended period of time. In "The Progress Principle" you will be able to experience the ruminations of these workers first-hand and in the process you will discover the secrets that motivate people to be the best that they can be. Furthermore, you will be able to compare and contrast the experiences of those who were employed by truly great organizations and managers who encouraged autonomy, set clear goals and furnished the resources necessary to succeed with companies whose managers and team leaders stifled creativity, constantly put obstacles in the way and were generally apathetic towards members of their team. As the title of the book suggests what truly motivates today's sophisticated and highly trained workers are those "small wins" that indicate that progress is actually being made on a problem or project being worked on. Managers and team leaders need to adjust to this new reality if they expect to achieve the kinds of positive results they are looking for.

One of the major reasons that I found "The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work" to be so darn compelling is that along the way I have worked for both types of organizations. Chances are that you have too. The clues are unmistakable and once you have the basic precepts of the book down the reactions of these employees become highly predictable. It is precisely why certain organizations thrive even in difficult economic times while others wither away on the vine. "The Progress Principle" is chock full of useful tips and strategies that managers and team leaders can implement right away. Furthermore the authors include a simple daily diary that managers and leaders can employ to assess how they are doing. Utilizing this tool just might turn out to be the most important five or ten minutes a leader can spend each day. "The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work" just might be the best business book that I have ever read. This book will challenge much of what you think you know about managing people while offering interesting alternatives to the way you have been doing things. A totally engaging read from cover to cover. Very highly recommended!

A Masterpiece

I read an advance copy of The Progress Principle several months back, and I just went back and read the book again. I am even more impressed this time than the last. Four things struck me in particular:

1. While most management books are based on anecdotes, the biased recollections of some famous executives, or on research that is presented as rigorous (but are not... Good to Great is a perfect example), the Progress Principle is based on the most rigorous field study ever done of creative work. And it draws on other rigorous work as well. As a result, the overall advice about the importance of small wins may be known to many people, but once you start digging into the smaller bits of advice about how to keep work moving along, the evidence behind those is very strong. In my view, the Progress Principle is the best example of an evidence-based management book I have ever seen.

2. The authors didn't drown in their rigor and the details of their work. They worked absurdly hard to write a book that is quite engaging to read and chock full with one implication after another about what you can do right now to do more effective work and to motivate it in the people around you.

3. Finally, the main point of this book may seem obvious to some readers, but if you listen to most management gurus and fancy consulting firms, the approach that the authors suggest is actually radically different. The broad sweep of strategy and radical change and big hairy goals is where much of modern management advice focuses, yet the finding from this book that it is relentless attention to the little things and the seemingly trivial moments in organizational life that real makes for greatness is not something that most leaders and their advisers get, yet it is the hallmark of our most creative companies like Pixar, Apple, Google, IDEO and the like. The implication of The Progress Principle, for example, that management training should focus on how to deal with the little interactions and smallest decisions -- and that is what makes for great leaders and organizations -- would, if taken seriously, mean completely revamping the way that management is taught throughout the world.

This book isn't a bag of breathless hype, it doesn't make grand and shocking claims, and it doesn't promise instant results. But it is fun and easy to read, it is as strongly grounded in evidence as any business book ever written, and it is relentlessly useful because it points to little things that managers, team members, and everyone else can do day after day to spark creativity and well-being. And it shows how those little things add-up to big victories in the end. I believe it is one of the most important business books ever written.

In the name of full disclosure, I am friends with the authors and did endorse the book. But I am friends with a lot of authors, but when they write bad books, I decline endorsement requests, and as I did very recently, let them know that I think their books aren't very good. Yes, I am biased, but I believe that this book deserves to be a #1 bestseller.

Celebrating Small Steps Towards Progress In The Work Place

It is always a good sign in reading a book when the early chapters prompt me to think about colleagues and friends to whom I will want to send a copy of the book. Such was the case when I began reading "The Progress Principle." Teresa Amabile and her husband, Steven Kramer, have assembled the results of in-depth research into the small wins that make the difference between effective workplace environments and those that are less than optimal.

Using sanitized journal entries by individuals who noted the interactions with team members and management in a variety of companies, the authors present a very convincing case for paying attention to the inner emotional life of workers as a key metric for predicting success of the team and the company.

In analyzing over 12,000 journal entries, Amabile and Kramer describe the challenges that a manager faces in encouraging and pointing out small and incremental steps of progress in a team setting. The evidence shows that many mangers and leaders assume that highly qualified team members do not need this kind of "coddling," when in fact every human being needs to sense that what they are doing day by day is contributing something of value, and that their contribution is both noticed and appreciated.

One very practical aspect of this book is the discussion about using checklists to ensure that a manager is tracking both catalysts and inhibitors to productivity and satisfaction among their team members. The authors cite the work of a very successful surgeon who found tremendous improvement in his rate of success when he developed and employed checklists to use in surgery:

"If you are like most of the surgeons that Gawande tried to convince to use his checklist - or even like Gawande himself - you will think the checklist is beneath you. Surely you are far too expert to need such a simplistic crutch. But it's precisely because you are an expert and therefore have so many things to think about, that taking five minutes for the checklist can be so important. We know from our own experience, and from that of many leaders we have spoken to, just how easy it is to become overwhelmed by the pressures of work and to lose track of those little successes that will eventually lead to that next breakthrough. It's even easier to ignore those little setbacks that can derail." (Pages 172-3)

These insights align perfectly with similar points that are raised in the recently published "The Organized Mind" by Dr. Daniel J. Livitin. He proposed that in an age of information overload, the more we can successfully outsource data to external tools and instruments - like checklists - the more we can make use of cognitive energy for important decision-making and creative thinking. As a pilot, I was trained early in the game to use checklists to make sure that nothing was omitted in doing a pre-flight a inspection or a run through of all of the cockpit instruments prior to taxiing for takeoff.

In collecting and commenting on these anecdotes from a variety of companies, the authors have made a significant contribution to our understanding of the small daily steps that we can take in making ourselves and our colleagues more productive and more satisfied in our work as we make progress toward the completion of significant achievements.

This book will be a good addition to the personal and professional library of anyone who strives for excellence in their work.

Dr. Jim Schnell is the Lead Social Scientist, Army Culture & Foreign Language Management Office at Headquarters/TRADOC/G-2, Fort Eustis, Virginia. He retired from the USAFR, at the rank of Colonel, in 2007 after 30 years service. His final 14 years were as an Assistant Air Attache to China, serving in a DIA HUMINT billet. He is a Fulbright Scholar.

One of the best books on the subject of wood spirits

I have been carving for nearly 20 years and one of my specialties is wood spirits. I rank this book as one of my favorites. Harold Enlow is an exceptional carver and well-known instructor. I credit this book with having given me my start. The book focuses on carving wood spirits in relief, with lots of illustrations and some good, honest, basic technique. I highly recommend it!

Muhammad Ibn Bashir is an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of New Jersey. He graduated from Howard University School of Communications and completed his education at Howard University School of Law. He specializes in criminal and constitutional law and has been a sole practitioner for 17 years. During this time, he has also represented clients in Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Kentucky. He has served as a Public Defender and was co-counsel in the defense of the infamous “World Trade Center Bombing” trial. As a criminal trial attorney, he maintains a reputation of a relentless cross-examiner and a tenacious advocate. He is a motivational speaker and lectures to high school and college audiences on criminal justice and procedure. Further, he is a dedicated community servant and is involved in many community-based projects impacting on the lives of the community’s youth. Insightful view point of defense attorney but

Impressed with the detailed view point of defense attorney...just wish this kindle book had a table of contents selection..But a good informative read...Also the book would be good for anyone thinking about joining law enforcement on cops sticking together on bad conduct..guess you cant swim with the sharks without being a shark...Wish this author would write a book on how a defendant can motivate or deal with a public defender or private attorney with most criminal cases plea guilty it would be nice if a book informed joe public how to tell if the defense attorney is being lazy or when to play your cards and plea. A few other great books to read for police encounters is Beat the Heat. And the Kindle book Beating the police interrogations by annoymous. I like the card shark tip.

Rare Honesty!

Usually, if you want an attorney to give you good advice, you have to pay for it by the hour. Thankfully, Brother Muhammad felt like sharing his wisdom and knowledge of the law, for less than $20.00 bucks! This is an informative guide for any block boy, block girl, hustla, hustler, scam artist, or stuck up spoiled brat who thinks, he/she is above the laws of this gov. The fact that the author uses many of his own cases and is so honest is a plus. There isn't much one has to say about a book such as this. If you are interested in law, I suggest you pick it up. If you are a law breaker, this is a must read. Though don't be fooled, brother Muhammad does not teach you how to break the law, he simply breaks it down for you in the simplest of terms. After reading this book, you may not need to retain an attorney, you may be able to plea yourself out with the prosecutor or gain the wisdom to change your ways. No matter who you are, or what side of the law you are on, this is a good book of reference, terminology and statical outcomes.

Awesome Guide

This book was a page turner from start to finish! It is so thorough and easily to read I could not put it down. This is a wealth of knowledge in 199 pages. One of the things I commend the author on is his ability to dissect technical legal jargon and explain it as though he were talking to the average person. There are so many things about the law that we as citizens either take for granted or just do not realize. The author does a commendable job in expressing the fact that the best way to avoid the criminal justice system is by staying away from it. He also gives compelling examples of why this is so important. When I saw this as an "urban" guide, I assumed it was targeted towards a particular audience. While this is apparent in the book, it is good read for any and every citizen to understand all factions of the law.

Next Installment in a Very Engaging Series

I always find myself enjoying M Louisa Locke's engaging, cozy mysteries, set in Victorian San Francisco and this new novel is no exception. They are written with a tremendous sense of historical accuracy coupled with a real affection for her characters on the part of the writer. In Bloody Lessons we revisit the charming, clever Annie Fuller running her comfortable boarding house, while dispensing astute financial advice in the guise of a psychic medium. This is the only way in which she can get her clients to take her seriously, at this time - but you get the feeling that things are about to change!
The novel begins with Laura Dawson, the young sister of Nate Dawson, the attractive lawyer with whom we (and Annie) have become familiar throughout the first two novels in the series. Laura has come to San Francisco to take up a position as a teacher but almost immediately she has two deeply distressing experiences, which will colour the rest of the story. Soon, Annie and Nate are drawn into a complex series of events which centre on the school system and a number of pernicious anonymous letters. This is 'cozy crime' so there is little to shock or disturb, but a very great deal to interest - and I always find this writer's work interesting. In this case, the school setting fascinated me, and since the novel is set in a place which is quite unfamiliar to me, this added an extra dimension of gentle pleasure. These make great bed-time reading. They won't give you nightmares, but you will quickly feel a part of Nate and Annie's world. And as the novel gathers pace towards the end, this becomes a genuine page turner - not least because the writer has allowed us to become so fond of her well drawn cast of characters.

Ms Locke does it again!

San Francisco comes alive in this latest addition to M Louisa Locke's cozy Victorian mystery series. Each book in the series not only provides an entertaining `whodunnit' but also uses social issues of the times to drive the plot such as servants' working conditions (Maids of Misfortune) and spiritualism (Uneasy Spirits). This time the political machinations behind the public education system provides the catalyst for events that lead the ever resourceful Annie Fuller and her fianc�, Nate Dawson, into an investigation to discover the identity of a blackmailer. In addition to this story thread, Locke has introduced Laura Dawson, Nate's sister, who has her own mystery to uncover. The strong willed, ambitious Laura (good heavens, a woman who wants to eschew marriage so she can go to university?) is a welcome addition to the cast of characters as her relationship with a civil war veteran reminds the reader how soon after this conflict Bloody Lessons is set, and highlights the age-old plight of returning soldiers who are expected to transition easily back into civilian life after suffering psychological and physical trauma.

Locke deftly weaves the back story of her other two novels into the book so that it can easily be read `out of order', however, those who have already been introduced to the lively and sociable residents of Annie's boarding house will enjoy learning more about their lives, and indeed, some of their darker secrets.

The romance between Annie and Nate is not without continuing complications despite the fact they are officially courting. The etiquette of the era is well described when it comes to the couple observing `seemly' behaviour but Locke does a nice job of conveying how both Nate and Annie are finding it increasingly harder not to get `hot and bothered' even when they are determined to meet societal standards.

I can highly recommend Bloody Lessons to all those who love historical mysteries where intrigue and romance are entwined with meticulous research, engaging characters and a well-paced plot.

Excellent character-driven mystery

Locke is one of my favorite writers. Her in-depth knowledge of the time period (she's a retired history prof) gives her books real historical flavor, the mystery is top-notch, but it is her handling of the characters, even the supporting cast, that make this book (and the whole series) really special. Writing characters that are engaging to the modern reader, but true to their time period is tricky. As someone who has read a lot of primary source material (e.g. letters from various war fronts, period newspaper articles, etc.) in addition to being an avid reader of historical fiction, I find Locke's handling of her characters simply amazing. Many of her characters have uncommon (but never impossible or too modern) goals or ideas for their times, but it is often that conflict between the times and her characters' personalities and foibles which drives the plot.

The story in Bloody Lessons is set against a backdrop of a very real political and social crisis in San Francisco in the late 1870's and early 1880's. In many ways the actual events were far more sensational and unbelievable than the happenings in the book. The mystery revolves around teachers and teaching during a time when the public school system in California was the focus of an intense partisan conflict.

The primary character, Annie Fuller, is a widowed boarding house owner and part-time clairvoyant whose newest boarder, Laura Dawson, is assaulted in the alley behind the boarding house. Laura is not only a teacher, but also the younger sister of Annie's love interest, lawyer Nate Dawson. The situation only gets murkier from there.

In the course of dealing with the mystery and the subsequent events, Annie, Nate, Laura, and a few other characters (no spoilers) all learn things about themselves that go beyond the events of the mystery. Much to my surprise, I found myself more interested in the personal journeys than the resolution of the mystery. But then the mystery was solved and it was very well-done. I highly recommend this book. It has been a huge help throughout my course in psychology of human sexuality. This book goes through in detail everything the text book covers however it gives further detail than a textbook. I have to say this is one of the best books to help college students I highly recommend this book. So far this has been one of the best purchases

I don't normally write reviews for my textbooks but this book was the exception. It approaches human sexuality and sexual education in an in depth, easily understood way. The author did a great job presenting the information. Too often textbooks are dry and hard to make yourself read through, this one almost makes you feel like you're having a conversation with the author. Read through the whole thing, learned a lot, and would recommend this book in a heartbeat. Whether you're buying it for a class, trying to decide whether or not to use this book to teach your class, or are just interested in the subject matter and don't mind a textbook read, this is the one.

Great, great read if you want to learn something about human sexuality and the sexual elements that can 'conceptually' get out of focus. It does an outstanding job of reading neutral without being 'right in your face'.

My only complaint is that the writing only skims the surface; I would greatly enjoy and benefit from the author going into more specific subject matters.

The author's message is easy to comprehend and I would recommend this book even if your only goal is to "quell your curiosity".
