Korean-born German philosopher Byung-Chul Han teaches philosophy and cultural studies at Berlin's University of the Arts (UdK). In the past few years, his provocative essays have been translated into numerous languages, and he has become one of the most widely read philosophers in Europe and beyond. This Is Very Opaque!

I came across Byung-Chul Han's ideas in a talk by the famous piano maestro, Daniel Barenboim. As of May 2016, Han's ideas are unavailable in English except in the two translations by Stanford University Press.

Han's take on The Burnout Society and The Transparency Society are very important and needs to be read in English.

Stanford University Press, surely has the good judgement to make these available, but the translation is abysmally bad.

Han presents his ideas in concise volumes. The English translations are pr�cis, but not precise. They are pedantic and needlessly written in a verbose and prolix text. It defeats the dissemination of Han's crucial concepts.

This has been a huge disappointment. I would recommend the present translation as the only source of Han's ideas (unless you know German), but sincerely hope that either Stanford University Press or another varsity publisher, commissions a fresh translation.

This translation deserves the shredder.

Han is amazing--he combines astute critiques of contemporary society with philosophy and theory in a striking manner. This book focuses on how we auto-exploit ourselves: in our media-encouraged mania to publicize, affirm, be present, be seen, we willingly give away so much of what used to be private to a corporate entity that does not have our best interests at heart.

As always with Han, part of what you take from the book is your own engagement with his aphoristic, at times dense, text (and thanks to Stanford for these excellent translations). But what you put into reading will pay big dividends.

Not easy reading, but valuable

As usual, Byung-Chul Han brief books (this one is barely 45 pages long) are challenging. Not only the amount of academic references quoted and commented, but his particular insight uncovering a not always pleasant side of common assumptions. Those wanting to expand their understanding of the not so convenient 'benefits' of contemporary life (transparency, intimacy, acceleration...) will find this vork very useful. I strongly advise to read The Burnout Society first, it will help the reader to better grasp some of this philosophers criticism.

Accessible and Challenging

This is the first Timothy Keller book I bought, after it was recommended in my Bible Study. I bought it in the hopes of being guided to clear up some of the accumulated "dirt" in my life, especially the sorts of things you stop noticing. In this, I was not disappointed.

The early chapters focus on the "usual" suspects such as Romantic Love, Money, Success. Later in the book, Keller delves even deeper into the idols that our society accumulates and which we buy into without even realising it. If the book starts challenging, these chapters really make you think, especially how each of us, and the church, fits into our broader society.

There are two things which I found particularly helpful about this book. The first is how it invites you to question your emotions - what makes you afraid, what makes you relieved, what stresses you? Keller offers simple, straightforward clues to spot the hidden idols in your life, which really help.

The second is how he links each chapter to a biblical character. My husband also read the book and he commented that we don't realise just how flawed many biblical characters are. We talk about how flawed the characters in the Bible are, but we often only focus on the surface phenomenon that make the character flawed. What we miss is the deep idols that many of them allowed into their lives, which are much easier to miss when we read the Bible.

I would highly recommend this book to any Christian. It is easy to read while being very challenging. It's also the kind of book you can get a lot of mileage out of - I personally intend to re-read it every so often to remind myself off that easy-to-ignore "dirt".

Essential reading. Keller sketches the subtle yet powerful sin of idolatry. Writing late in the 1st century the Apostle John could say "keep yourselves from idols". I judge, Keller expands just what John meant.

Very helpful for believers and skeptics

Tim Keller as usual displays tremendous insight into the human condition as well as the Western (specifically US) context. Those who are Christian and non-Christian will benefit greatly from the insights this book provides. Keller doesn't just leave you hanging with lofty concepts but also gives plenty of cross-cultural examples that make very clear the point that the human heart tends to bow down to anything other than the true God and that those other things always come up short of the fulfillment we all deeply desire.

One of its huge claws rested on the parapet of one side of the bridge, while its tail lay right against the other. The monster seemed to be asleep, and as it breathed, fire and smoke came out of its nostrils.

A Child's Treasury of Japanese Fairy Tales

Originally published in 1903, Yei Theodora Ozaki's translation of Sadanami Sanjin's collection of Japanese fairy tales has been the introduction of many a young child into the legends and fables of old Japan across the years. Definitely not a scholarly reference or valuable research tool for folktale researchers, Ozaki unabashedly re-crafted some of the stories, translating loosely and adding in elements of unrelated tales, in order to make them more enjoyable and understandable for Western children. She even gave Urashimataro a happy ending!

There is something delightfully romantic about translations from this era, due to the unfamiliarity with Japanese culture at the time. Terms that would not be translated today, like "oni" and "samurai", are rendered as "ogre" and "knight" and other English equivalents. While unauthentic, this makes the stories more approachable by young children who have a mind for fantasy but haven't yet graduated to Japanese Studies.

While far from a picture book, artist Kakuzo Fujiyama contributed 66 beautiful drawings to illustrate the 22 tales. Unfortunately, all the illustrations are reproduced in black-and-white, instead of the original color plates included in the original pressings.

Many of the stories here are familiar with anyone even slightly interested in Japanese folklore. "Momotaro, or the Story of the Son of a Peach, "The Story of Urashima Taro, the Fisher Lad", "Kintaro the Golden Boy" and "The Ogre of Rashomon". Along with these, there are rarer tales that I haven't seen in any other Japanese fairy tale collection. "The Stones of Five Colors and the Empress Jokwa", "The Sagacious Monkey and the Boar" and "How and Old Man Lost his Wren" were all new to me.

the stories are wonderful. a few of them match some of the stoies we heard while living in Okinawa with the military.

HOWEVER, I cannot give the Kindle version a 5 star like I would like to, because the formatting is absolutely horrendous.

JAPANESE FAIRY TALES by Yei Theodora Ozaki

Japanese Fairy Tales, also known as The Japanese Fairy Book, is a 1908 collection of traditional fables and folktales compiled and translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki.

As I understand it, this is a somewhat liberal translation; accuracy to the source material has obviously been sacrificed to a certain extent for the sake of accessibility. Interestingly, words that would not be translated today are translated here for the sake of the Western audience ("samurai," for example, is translated "knight"). Many of these stories are not concise - they tend to meander - and some end rather abruptly. Without substantial familiarity with the original material, it's difficult to determine how much of this is the stories themselves and how much is Ozaki's doing, but I suspect the latter is more responsible.

These stories are, nevertheless, mostly quite enjoyable, and the differences and similarities with Western fairy tales are particularly interesting. (Wicked stepmothers, apparently, are a source of plot conflict the world over.)

Many of these stories are grim and violent, of the degree of the original un-sanitized Grimm Brothers' tales. There are vicious revenge stories here, and the ones involving animals bring to mind Tom and Jerry (or, perhaps more accurately, Itchy and Scratchy, never mind Happy Tree Friends), even with some obvious sanitizing ("The Farmer and the Badger" is a notable example). Many stories do not have happy endings. They certainly aren't all for small children.

Accuracy aside, Japanese Fairy Tales is a nice little collection of stories, and a decent introduction to Japanese folklore.

Scott Elledge was Goldwin Smith Professor of English Emeritus at Cornell University. He was the author of E. B. White: A Biography and Wider than the Sky: Poems Selected for Young Readers. He was the editor of the Norton Critical Edition of Paradise Lost, Eighteenth-Century Critical Essays, and Milton’s "Lycidas": An Approach to Criticism.

A good biography that's inspirational to writers

He's so much more than "Charlotte's Web" or "Stuart Little"! Read a volume of E.B. White's essays first and follow it up with this biography, and then you'll know almost everything about the man and his work. Author Scott Elledge was fortunate enough to have corresponded and visited with White; this work is therefore as accurate and as personal as one can be. It begins with the birth of Elwyn Brooks "Andy" White in Westchester County, N.Y., and follows his path to the West Coast as a young man and eventually back to New York and The New Yorker magazine, with diversions to a farm in Maine. The chapters about The New Yorker offices are the most interesting to those of us curious about how that publication works. And don't take that "Elements of Style" paperback on your bookshelf for granted! (And who *was* Strunk, anyway?) You'll learn here why White got involved in that project and what work went into its revision.

This book includes more than 30 pages of photos, illustrations, and original essay drafts. It's fascinating to see White's penciled editorial changes over his own typewritten paragraphs.

Recommended for fans of E.B. White, fans of The New Yorker magazine, and writers of all genres.

Not an intimate look but as close as White would have wanted

The review below strikes me as unfair. Who DOES write like E.B. White? I thought Elledge's prose was decent, workmanlike, and unobtrusive. His scholarship seems excellent. Most important, Elledge is smart, respectful but not overawed -- he points out White's long immaturity and self-absorption -- and yet humane. (The more you delve into the world of biography, the more significant the last characteristic becomes.) He likes White and as a reader, you will too.

Great source for exams preparation

About one month ago I ordered four math books published by Argo Brothers Publishing – Math 3rd Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2), and Math 5th Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2). Being a Math Tutor I always check different additional sources to help my students to be successful on the tests, especially based on Common Core. Usually I search Internet looking for Test Preparation information, and then compiling worksheets for different topics. It is hard work, because there is a lot of outdated information with different point of view on the same subject. I found almost everything I need in those books! Part 1 has a hundreds multiple choice questions which cover different topics, and Part 2 requires writing answers, which is much harder, and makes a student to analyze, and formulate his answer in proper way. Guessing doesn’t work! All the books are well structured based by days and weeks, which can help with the planning of studying. I started to utilize those books in my tutoring process, and I’m very happy with the result – it saves my time and effort, and I have big source of worksheets wit the answer keys in one place! I would recommend those books to parents of my students as a perfect guide to be successful on Common Core exams. I’d like to order the book Math 7th Grade Common Core Workbook (Part 1 and Part 2) in near future.
