An Excellent and Valuable Book

This book is an eye-opening and thought-provoking examination of hidden forms of racism that have persisted in the United States beyond the 1960s. The author provides her readers with a historical account of the different forms of racism that shaped the African American experience in the United States from the slave era through the 1960s, arguing that racism often changed its form but never disappeared. She then keenly demonstrates how discrimination against African Americans ensued well beyond the civil rights era by examining laws, policies, economic factors, educational disparities, labor issues, and other forms of both individual and institutional racism. Invisible Enemy should have a disclaimer on the cover, perhaps a warning from the Surgeon General: "This book can be hazardous to your health." I say this because reading it raised my blood pressure. The author provides her readers with ample evidence of overt and hidden acts of racism and injustices that have been committed against people of color for decades, from the environmental justice struggles of black communities to help others understand that NIMBY politics (Not In My Back Yard) often had PIBBY consequences (Place In Black Back Yards), to an act committed by opponents of affirmative action in 1995, when 15 black students at UC Berkeley received anonymous fliers reading "When I see you in class it bugs the hell out of me because you're taking the seat of someone qualified" (119). It's enough to make your blood boil; but it's a history we cannot forget. The author handles these difficult subjects skillfully, she clearly knows how to present the material in ways that are not just informative and accessible, but thought-provoking. I also admire the way she makes links between the Black experience and that of other marginalized groups, like Latinos and immigrants, as well as links between the post-1960s freedom movement and the global struggles for justice that emerged in the late twentieth century and continue today. This book engages readers in ways that are at times unsettling but also in ways that are rewarding and extremely valuable. It is an important contribution to the field of African American Studies, Justice Studies, and Race and Ethnic Studies.

Well the gloves finally come off for the world to see and have to deal with about how it really is in the universe. We have been fed a pablum of religion and science for centuries and apparently it is time for people to put ALL of that aside and get a real view of our history and where we are now. Lou, unlike most UFO-olisgists, has a very unique point of view as he simply put is not from these parts and has first hand knowledge of what he writes about. Most people will either have to dismiss this fact or accept what he is showing everyone as there is simply no in between ground. Great book and to open ones eyes and see in many ways, "as above, so below".

I have followed Lou's work (as the poster Azrael) for years his drips have never contradicted each other and struck a chord that just made sense. This is his best work yet it finally sheds light on the big picture Lou has hinted at for years I have a lifetime of experiences both my own and what paranormal encounters those close to me have told me about and this (and the previous book year of the dragon) finally puts them into perspective, some of the events are perfectly explained in this book when they were too bizarre to previously have made sense.

Great read for those who can't stop climbing.

It's a very good book since it walks you through the basics of being a good athlete that focuses strictly on being a climber. It organizes a great work out for those who are able to climb every day and those that can't. Most of it is logic and common sense so for me this book was very entertaining at midnight after a climbing session when I couldn't climb more, I would read this. It filled in the blanks about certain work-out myths and it helped me focus my routine towards climbing.

So, is it worth it?? If you searched for it, and you found it, it's probably worth it for you.

Great book - but if you're on a budget - decide between this and the other Horst book

This is a great book. Just a heads-up though.

The book "Training for Climbing" is an equally excellent reference - it contains much the same information as this book, only in more detail, with sections on anatomy, physiology etc. If you want to dispense with those discussions, buy this book. But I'd say buy one or the other, and save your extra money for another reference.

About the Author

Dr. Qin Zhang is the director of the Center for Precision and Automated Agricultural Systems and a professor of agricultural automation in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Washington State University. His research interests are in the areas of agricultural automation, intelligent agricultural machinery, and agricultural infotronics.

Dr. Francis J. Pierce is a professor emeritus in the Departments of Crop and Soil Sciences and Biological Systems Engineering at Washington State University. He is currently a principal in AgInfomatics, LLC, providing consulting services in agriculture, soil and water conservation, and agriculture technology with a focus on precision agriculture and evaluation of research and outreach projects.
