smart, thorough, insightful

When an area is so remote that even google maps doesn't seem to know much about it, you know it is just begging for a real insider to reveal the wonders there. Allen is the man for the job. He does a fantastic job of creating a guide book that makes you feel like a local. I enjoyed the history, culture and especially the tips for living like a native Namibian. I look forward to one day visiting this beautiful country and eating at some of the joints Allen recommends.

It seems like a guide book might only be for a traveler, but I found Namibia to be a book that gave me so much insight to the people, land and culture it was a worthy read even if I never make it. Well written and very in-depth, this is a great cultural guide for anyone thirsty to learn about other cultures.

As an AP World History teacher, I would recommend this book on both its content and readability. Lord knows that so many historical/culture/travel writers kill their fascinating subjects with each click of the keyboard. Allen, instead, brings Namibia alive to the reader. It was a delight to sink my teeth into the book.

Namibia is on my shelf, will be a gift for any sub-Saharan African traveling friends, and may become a read in my history classes. Well rounded and fun, Namibia is a fantastic book.

This book is well written and very easy to navigate as a travel guide. The storied style of the writing makes this book not only helpful but fun to read. It follows the traditional style of guide books with the tabbed sides, making the format very user friendly.
Allen has a writing style that makes me hope he comes out with some other works. I'd buy it.

worthless - do not buy it. this is a kid, armed with a college degree, who had the incredible luxury of taking TWO years off, traveling Africa at his leisure meanwhile his friends had jobs (which he scorned as lemmings) who created wealth and taxes to provide for the great advantages that he took for granted. who has two years to wander Africa? and he lived so frugally, always thumbing a ride and not paying and not realizing that Africans with cars need income from picking up travelers. he even went so far to eat leftover food on plates by western tourists, scoffing at their waste. even the poorest African has more pride than that. then he regales us at the end with the meaning of life. so weighty for a young man. he only went back to Namibia because he had a girlfriend left from his first African sojourn. every country he visited in Africa, save one, I visited and WORKED as a civil engineer during my 30 years career. I created something of value; he created nothing except satisfy his hormones. he knows nothing of Africa or her peoples. he knows nothing of responsibility or helping others. the book is a joke. dont waste your money.

About the Author

Gary L. Lilien is Distinguished Research Professor of Management Science at the Smeal College of Business at Penn State. He is also cofounder and Research Director of the ISBM. He is the author or co-author of twelve books (including Marketing Models with Phil Kotler, Marketing Engineering and Principles of Marketing Engineering), as well as over 100 professional articles. He is on the editorial board of the International Journal for Research in Marketing; is functional Editor for Marketing for Interfaces, and is Area Editor at Marketing Science. He was Editor in chief of Interfaces for six years. He is an Inaugural INFORMS Fellow, was honored as Morse Lecturer for INFORMS and also received the Kimball medal for distinguished contributions to the field of operations research. He is on the Board of Directors of the American Marketing Association.

Arvind Rangaswamy is Senior Associate Dean and Anchel Professor of Marketing at Penn State. Prof. Rangaswamy has published numerous articles in such leading journals as Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Management Science, Information Systems Research, Service Science, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Marketing Letters, Psychometrika, Multivariate Behavioral Research, and Journal of Economics and Statistics. He was an Area Editor for Marketing Science (1997–2011) and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Interactive Marketing; International Journal of Intelligent Systems in Accounting, Finance and Management; Journal of Service Research; Journal of Business-to-Business Marketing; and Journal of Electronic Commerce.

Arnaud De Bruyn is Professor of Marketing and Head of the Marketing Department at ESSEC Business School, Paris, France, and Associate Director for the Marketing Engineering Program at the Institute for the Study of Business Markets at Penn State. His work has been published in Marketing Science, Management Science, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Information Systems Research, etc., and serves on the editorial board of IJRM, Journal of Interactive Marketing and RAM. His work on the quantitative analysis of viral marketing behavior, co-authored with Gary Lilien, has won the IJRM Best Paper Award.

Extremely useful to bring your work to another level

I purchased this book as part of an MBA course, but I loved it and feel you could get the same benefit I did by reading this book and using the associated software. As I read, I began to think back about the gut feel decisions I made in a Marketing Manager role in the past and almost cringed. I began to see how much better my decisions would have been if I had applied more quantitative methods. I have this book with me at work now and refer to it when I start to think how we will frame a client problem and what information we might need. I am not prepared to build the marketing models based on this book, but I know enough to ask the people who can and know what I am asking for.

For those thinking of purchasing this for a class or just winging it without the book I would say buy the book. You will use it again and any course will follow the software lessons which are directly explained in the book.

I've use this book a lot and I have it up here with a bunch of other books that I use for him lettering and also creative lettering and lots of stuff so I definitely recommend it for sure. It's definitely more of a workbook look I didn't pay attention to it even says a creative workbook so if you're looking for more examples then this wouldn't be the book for you but if you're looking for a workbook then this would be a good book for you.

Hand lettering made a big comeback recently in the design world and is now so ubiquitous that I dare say that it's bordering on being overused. Still, I believe there is always room for good hand lettering and that every good designer/illustrator should also be able to draw letterforms. This book os for anyone who wants to learn how or for experienced letterers to find new ways to practice their skills.

The first thing you should know is that nobody becomes good at lettering without hours and hours of practice and this book is designed to get you going on those hours of practice in fun ways. Take note of the subtitle, "A Creative Workbook" because it is very much that. The book contains four general sections, History and Fundamentals, Process, Creative Confidence and Exploration, but the main focus throughout is on getting out your pen and pencil and getting to it. There are tons of very creative prompts to get you exploring and trying out different things rather than just copying existing typefaces.

There are also many examples of various lettering styles but do not expect to find complete alphabets here to copy from. Instead you will be challenged to learn the various basic elements and then play with those creatively to come up with your own letterforms. For me, this was just what I needed and I can see myself pulling this thing out and working through a few pages anytime I'm bored or have a few minutes to spare.

Helpful and Inspirational Hand Lettering Guide

I purchased this after flipping through it in a local chain bookstore. It's useful as both a practice aid and for inspiration for those looking to get into hand lettering or anyone who appreciates typography. The book is comprised of different exercises that are designed to challenge your creativity. In each section, there is a small paragraph with an example(s) and empty space for you to use. (I would recommend using a sketchbook or other paper to practice on so you can continue to go through the exercises over and over.) There are also suggestions for different tools to try. After doing 2 exercises I felt like I had learned something new and was making progress. One review said it's not good for a beginner, but I think it is. It's written in a manner that teaches by getting you to use your creativity and imagination. So, if you're looking for a step-by-step guide on how to draw each individual letter in every style, this isn't it. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because there are some exercises that (for me) weren't very clearly explained, but it's a personal teaching preference. Overall, it's a really good book for the money and I would buy it again if I had to.

This is the first detailed account of the remarkable British writer and artist John Hargrave (1894 1982) and his three creations: The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, The Green Shirt Movement for Social Credit and The Social Credit Party of Great Britain. Combining art, politics and design to visually stunning effect, Hargrave and his followers created a maverick but uniquely English form of modernism, one which harked back to a mythical past but also looked forward to a futuristic Utopia when mankind would be freed from the tyranny of work and war. A product of his turbulent times, Hargrave believed in ritual, ceremony, symbology and the resolute imagination of the creative individual as the keys to a better world. The book draws on the extensive visual archive of the Kibbo Kift, held at the Museum of London, comprising graphic designs, photographs, ceremonial objects, banners, costume, regalia, log books and archive material, much of which has not been seen in public since the 1920s and 1930s. The collection includes many striking photographs by Angus McBean, official Kin Photographer in the late 1920s. Designing Utopia also touches on Hargrave s career as a writer. In his novels, as with his graphics, Hargrave s imagination drew from the fragmented modern world of mass culture, advertising and film he saw around him and re-cast its elements in ways that suited his convictions about social order. Hargrave and the Kibbo Kift have been under-explored by cultural historians. But their time has come. The story of the Kibbo Kift has strong resonances with twenty-first century debates about art, politics, individualism, anti-capitalism, nature and the environment. It is also a story about English youth adapting to a new century, new ideologies and a new sense of possibilities in a global world."

Fascinating, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated

A fascinating, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated account of the life and work of John Hargrave, founder of the Kibbo Kift Kindred and later among the chief protagonists of the Social Credit movement in England.

Exemplifying the virtues and limitations of the early 20th century "self-taught man", Hargrave was accomplished in a variety of fields and evidently possessed great powers of imagination, energy and charisma. He designed the Kibbo Kift Kindred as a pacifistic, progressive and universalist breakaway from Baden-Powell's Christian/nationalist/militaristic Scouting movement.

Although never very great in numbers, the Kindred were highly active and influential during the decade following the First World War. They organised camping and hiking expeditions, staged elaborately theatrical rituals and mystical plays, produced strikingly original handcrafts and costumes, all according to Hargrave's comprehensive philosophy for the betterment of each individual Kin member and the wider society.

As war again approached, Hargrave attempted to transform the Kindred into a political movement, via the quasi-militaristic Green Shirt Brigade, agitating for the institution of a radical, Social Credit-based economic reform. Essentially failing in this attempt, Hargrave gradually withdrew from the public spotlight, and his efforts had been largely forgotten by the time he died in 1982.

The final chapter argues persuasively that the Kindred was, in fact, an idea decades ahead of its time, pointing out parallels between Hargrave's Utopian visions and later counter-cultural movements such as the hippies, neo-Paganism, the Burning Man festival and the Occupy movement.

I have been a peace advocate since the sixties, but since hearing Paul K. Chappell speak this past January and reading his Road to Peace
book series, his thoughts have opened my mind and touched my heart as nothing has before. The COSMIC OCEAN, the newest book in
the series speaks to the human condition and our shared humanity. Paul has transformed his own personal trauma into his teacher and
so can we.

A Soldier's Transformative Guidebook for Our Times

Throughout history, acts of war and violence have torn at our peace of mind. Our country seems more divided than ever—over issues never resolved from our own Civil War, as we take national inventory on the historical impact of chattel slavery. Through the heart of the struggle has emerged an unlikely “peacemaker” and visionary, Paul Chappell, who comes at the peace dialogue with an analysis both grounding and ground-breaking of the factors that keep humans from living peacefully, even as “the most powerful motivator that convinces people to stay and fight is not a natural propensity for violence or killing, but their capacity for love and compassion.”

Everywhere we turn, we hear about income inequality, human and animal rights violations, global warming and wars. Perhaps the greatest threat to our survival is a growing sense that we can’t find a sense of meaning or purpose together—a sense of shared humanity. Even “peaceful” protests have turned de-humanizing, with people shouting obscenities face-to-face. Our youth are angry at us for imparting such a troubled world to them—as they navigate the social issues of our times with few of us standing with them as co-interpreters. People who want justice have lost patience and are no longer willing to negotiate.

To give us context, Chappell is painstakingly honest about the brutality he experienced at the hands of his father, a war veteran with PTSD, trauma that led to his “lifelong obsession with war and suffering.” Chappell admits that like so many of our current students, he struggled to pay attention in school. He daydreamed and experimented with violence and fighting—including fighting sanctioned by the U.S. military. Like most young men, he was drawn to video games to work out his aggressions—he provides an objective assessment of what they teach.

Unlike other “peace” writers who focus on communication and strategy, Chappell provides a deep exploration of the trauma embedded in U.S. and world history, including slavery and brutality. Because of his lived experience, Chappell unpacks trauma more thoroughly than any author I’ve read. His rare revelations, an interpretative guide through the roots of his own trauma, give us the insight needed to face our own trauma—and that of others. “Inflicting violence on others is a way to bridge the gap of isolation by allowing others to feel our pain,” writes Chappell. For people to express their trauma more constructively, he suggests we better understand its roots and build compassion.

Chappell sets the example for waging peace through a compassionate approach. Despite all the reasons for him to act with rancor and acrimony, he instead urges understanding for those who went before us and reminds us of the epic struggles of our ancestors to get to where we are today. He also urges compassion for those with whom we disagree.

Chappell writes insightfully about the two teachers who “planted those seeds of encouragement” in him by encouraging him to write. He also expresses his deep gratitude for the publishing executive who saw transformative thinking in his earliest writing and took time to support him. By taking those risks, these courageous thinkers have allowed us access to an intellectual giant and courageous soldier of peace.

In so doing, they’ve given us a one-of-a-kind window into Chappell’s brilliant musings on life’s deepest mysteries. Chappell’s take-away is that to create a literacy of peace and shared humanity, we must decode our legacies of race, trauma, brutality and war—and their intersection with science, spirituality and philosophy. Chappell asserts boldly that only a literacy of shared humanity—a sense of purpose and meaning—can save us from ourselves and from extinction. He is serving that literacy up for us in what I consider to be a guidebook for our times.

I am not the same after reading this book. Chappell’s book has given me uncommon perspective and framework for meaning like no other. Despite the growing challenges to “protect our fragile future,” Chappell is dogged in his belief that we can transform our world and “overcome a force as powerful as the religion of war,” by “strengthening the muscles of our shared humanity and by waging peace.” We do need the warrior skills of intelligence, discipline, valor and integrity, says Chappell, but we need them to hold the tensions of waging peace.

Chappell masterfully touches on every human question—and leaves us one to probe: how many other young people, experiencing trauma and attending school lost in daydreams of violence, are courageous, intellectual giants just waiting for an invitation to our shared humanity?

The Way Forward

Paul K. Chappell continues to shine penetrating light on the issues of war and peace in the 21st century and on the very notion of what it means to be human. His language is marked by compassion, intelligence, and clarity. The subject demands clarity. The message is too important to be misunderstood.

Chappell is bringing the message that our violent and destructive myths must fall away in order to reveal our true natures. What are some of these myths? Well, for one, the nature of war (and the reasons for it) have become a kind of myth, if not a religion, for those of us who support it. Soldiers, unfortunately, are often treated as Christ figures in order to sanctify this myth of war. But once we begin to understand the deceitful nature of the war system, we realize that it is time to replace this religion of war with a religion of peace.

It is a vast undertaking.

Part I of the book speaks to "Our Primordial Past" and explores the ingenious -- though often flawed -- ways in which humanity has dealt with the trauma and violence of living. Chappell describes the predatory nature of life but reminds us that we are predators that seek purpose and meaning. He explores the Greek myths, especially the myth of Poseidon, who for the Greeks personified the destructive power of nature, and suggests we may be the new Poseidons, holding in our hands an equal power of destruction. He remembers that throughout our long history, human beings have often been exploited as tools, but insists we now need to treat all human beings as human beings in order to live the lives our innate dignity deserves. Chappell also analyzes the Iliad to present completely modern understandings of war.

In Part II of the book, he explores "Our Fragile Future" and maps out ways to get to a better place. He speaks of the nine spiritual organs that need to be fed and outlines four practical steps human beings can take to solve our most pressing problems. As he says, we need to expand our perceptions of beauty, feed our spiritual organs, increase the clarity of our communications, and transform the nature of our suffering -- to find the light in the darkness. In fact, he indicates that the brightest lights can be found only by confronting the darkness.

Have you ever thought that "violence is the language of trauma"? Have you ever considered that 20th-century psychologist Abraham Maslow, in his landmark 1943 paper, might have been mistaken to list human needs in a hierarchy? As Chappell points out, needs are not hierarchical; they are interactive, dynamic, and rooted in social connection. Practically every page of Chappell's book is replete with such insights.

And the language is as clear as Whitman's or Rumi's. Chappell is a very different writer from Whitman or Rumi because, in many ways, his books are explanations and arguments, not poems (yet he often writes metaphorically), and he keeps much of history in mind as he writes. But I think Whitman and Rumi would recognize him as a brother.

There are plenty of reasons for despair in the modern world. One need only read The New York Times every day to learn about the destructive political and economic forces at work in the world. But reading Paul Chappell reminds us that that is not the whole picture and, perhaps, not even the biggest part of the picture. There are many thousands if not millions of voices these days who are testifying to the larger picture, and these voices are much more profound than most anything you would read in a daily newspaper.

The biggest part of the picture revolves around the human need and yearning to be connected to other human beings -- and the natural world -- in meaningful, compassionate, positive, and peaceful ways. This need was not created from the same kind of material from which a weapon can be created. A weapon can be created and dismantled. You cannot dismantle the human spirit. It arises from a much deeper and more powerful source -- a cosmic source, in fact. Reading Paul Chappell makes you realize that it is from this infinite cosmic source -- this cosmic ocean -- that humanity can draw its strength.

A sparkling, dramatic series

This series combines the glitz and glam of Gossip Girl and the intrigue of the past to create a wholly entertaining and absorbing new series!

The Luxe

The Luxe, written by Anna Godbersen, is in a class of its own. Unlike all of the rich girl novels floating around out there, The Luxe takes place in 1899. But don't think that these girls are as mild mannered as their time period would suggest. Penelope Hayes would do anything in order to marry Henry Schoonmaker. Her best friend Elizabeth Holland would rather not marry anyone in her class at all. But when circumstances beyond these girls' control puts them at odds with each other, situations tense. Throw in a bitter maid and a nosy younger sister, and things go from tense to deadly, and someone might not live to see the next season.

Nothing like any of the novels today that feature the upper class, The Luxe is one delicious read that nearly any girl will love. Full of a vivid cast of characters that you just have to love of hate, The Luxe is a captivating and luxurious delight. It is evident that Godbersen's writing is well researched through the carefully detailed aspects of everyday life that rather than come off as tedious, shines through interesting and gives the novel depth. Kept lively by alternating points of view, The Luxe is a perfect combination of Ann Rinaldi and Gossip Girl. You'll think you have it figured out by page fifty, but the plot's mysterious and secretive twists will leave readers eagerly anticipating a sequel.

Rumors

Manhattan has never before had more juicy gossip to spread ever since Elizabeth Holland's mysterious "demise". But as the New Year approaches, rumors fly and the Holland family is bombarded with endless questions...and endless bills. Diana Holland finds her own way of making money, and she and Henry Schoonmaker fall in love. But Penelope Hayes is determined to make Henry hers--no matter what the cost. Elizabeth is living blissfully out West with Will, but then a panicked note from her sister brings her rushing back to the city. And in between it all is a former maid who has the inside sources and ambition that will threaten them all.

Fast paced, elegant, and full of intrigue, Rumors proves to be much more engrossing and complicated than its prequel. Penelope becomes the villain that you come to feel sorry for, Henry the man with surprising depth, Diana the unlikely and lovable heroine, and Lina the dreaming girl you have to pity and admire.

Moving beyond the standard plotlines that dominated The Luxe, Godbersen weaves an intricate and convoluted story via the many colorful and wonderfully unique characters that builds and builds until it takes on a life of its own. In this glittery, elusive and sly world seeping with secrets, things aren't always as they seem, a secret told is worth a tidy sum, but a secret kept is worth more, and you should never underestimate the power of money and reputation. Godbersen builds suspense until the very end, giving us both a happy and unhappy ending, and leaves readers wrapped around her little finger, begging for more.

Envy

Picking up just two months where Rumors left off, Envy continues with the inexplicably engrossing story of New York City's finest society girls and their secrets and scandals. Elizabeth Holland is still mourning the death of her husband, Will Keller, and is doing the best to pick up her life. The new Mrs. Schoonmaker, formerly Penelope Hayes and formerly Elizabeth's best friend, isn't making life easy for either Holland sister. Penelope insists on carrying on the charade of Elizabeth being her best friend, and knows that Diana Holland and her husband Henry are in love, and will do anything to keep them apart. Amidst them all is Carolina Broad, who is determined to continue with her recently elevated lifestyle, no matter what. The dreary winter months are filled with secrets and scandals, love and greed, proposals and farewells...

Godbersen has crafted the perfect guilty-pleasure series for teens. Envy is even more jam-packed with all of the scintillating gossip and drama that its prequels are well known for. Godbersen keeps the book moving at a good clip by rotating the points of view among her characters, which does well in keeping the reader's attention. She also departs from a familiar setting and takes her characters to Palm Beach, Florida, a nice change in scenery that keeps the series fresh, and offers a bit of an educational look at another aspect of the lifestyle of the rich. Towards the end of the novel, readers will be gratified to see that a few characters develop a backbone and an admirable sense of honor, which certainly spices up the storyline, leave readers wondering what on earth the author has up her sleeve. Godbersen is proving herself a bold and fearless writer, and continues the tradition of leaving readers hanging in an ending that is both exciting and exceedingly frustrating, but will ensure that readers will keep coming back.

These books are a great read, and for a great value! For people who love the thought of having tea in the afternoon with a pretty dress on and play hard to get with the men who would like your hand... then this is a great story for you! I am a huge romantic and this story has many romatic story lines in it! If you love to read, and you love romance without all the dirty story lines, then buy these books!

Extremely memorable

I read this series when I was younger and absolutely loved the gossip and the winding of the novel. Definitely a book of sexy historical elite scandal that I would recommend.
