About the Author
Sandy Magnuson received a Master’s degree in elementary school counseling at Southwest Missouri State University in 1983 and a doctorate degree in counselor education from the University of Alabama. After teaching in counselor education programs in Alabama, Texas, and Colorado, Dr. Magnuson returned to elementary school counseling at University Schools in Greeley, Colorado and retired in 2010. During her career as a counselor educator and school counselor, she was committed to active participation in school counseling organizations and her own continuing education and supervision. She also conducted research in the development of counselors across the professional lifespan and supervision of counselors. Dr. Magnuson authored over 60 articles that have been published in professional journals.

Ken Norem completed his master’s degree in counselor education at the University of Northern Iowa in 1963 and his doctorate from Iowa State University in 1978. Ken’s professional experiences include 5 years as a public high school teacher, 20 years as a school counselor, 24 years as a counselor educator and 20 years (part-time) in private practice and community mental health.� He coordinated counselor education programs at three universities. Since retiring, Ken has been actively involved in political activities and volunteering.

Rational Decision Making

I've read through this book several times and it's one of those you just keep going back to. I first had practical experience with it applying some of the techniques of value and preference capture to support a software system being built. I've since used it in grain purchasing and merchandising and elevator design where values and tradeoffs among mutiple performance factors are important. I would personally recommend it for anyone climbing the corporate ladder. It just makes your thinking better and more organized and it's great for defending your own rationality in the face of pressure to conform and to organize muddle-headed group think.

Excellent utility and decision theory foundation

This book is a very good foundation of MCDA (Multi Criteria Decision Analysis) with all the mathematical proofs behind the theory. The authors give real life examples on the application of their model and explain the intuition of their methodology.

Although the math is a bit advanced, the authors explain step-by-step all the terminology, what makes the theory easily understandable. I have used it as a reference in a course of my M.Sc. in Operations Research and Decisions, but I believe undergraduates can understand it (not without sweating a few drops).

Personally, I believe that Keeney's book "Value Focused thinking" is more intuitive and day-to-day oriented, but the bulk of the theory is presented in this earlier book. So if you like math and economics, you should try this book first.

Methodology on preference retrieval implementation

This is a very good book grounded in solid microeconomic theory foundations. It starts with classical micro theory such as preferences and axioms, and it moves on to risky preferences and methods on how to retrieve them by constructing careful experiments. It also discusses the limitations on preference retrieval by such axiomatic methods due to the heuristics and biases that occur in decision making behaviour. However, this book is also useful for non-economists, as it describes decision making theories and applied methods on how to retrieve preferences in fields such as policy and medical sciences. The book's target market is mostly economics/ decision sciences graduate students or those who have achieved a comparable or higher level of their studies/work experience. It has also very instructive real world examples of PhD students running preference retrieval experiments and reporting their results. Good book for those keen on the subject. The 1976 version of the book has won a book prize, hence the assurance of quality. Furthermore, Raiffa is a well established Harvard academic, which further lends credence to the book.

In 500 BC a young member of the Krypteia kills his first Helot; on Mt Ithome in 461 two Spartan prisoners plot their escape from their Helot captors; in 456 the poet Pindar learns from the man’s widow what happened to one of his Olympic victors during a democratic revolution in the colony of Kyrene; on the island of Melos in 415 two children of Athenian settlers learn what happened to the original islanders; in 399 Socrates asks Plato if it as a tragic playwright that he wishes to be remembered; in 374 an Athenian diplomat to Persia is given a Spartan slave to attend him – his dilemma – should he try to free a fellow Greek? Or should he rejoice at the humiliation of an enemy? In 373 a Spartan soldier is torn between helping a Helot recruit to escape and obeying the orders of the governing Ephors.

First published in 1929, this little volume has stood the test of time. A collection of thirteen short stories set over a 100 year period during the great age of the Greek city-states, Mitchison demonstrates her genuine knowledge and empathy for what it might have meant to be an ordinary Greek man or woman or child in the events of those years. The stories are fascinating and intricate and arouse real sympathy for the protagonists. There is some superb characterisation. I especially enjoyed the story entitled ‘The Epiphany of Poieessa’ which is a kind of postscript to Mitchison’s long novel of the Peloponnesian War ‘Cloudcuckooland’. Freedom, its limitations and restrictions are themes which are examined and re-examined in the contexts of each of the stories. The reader is left with a genuine feeling that this is how it might have been.

I have only two caveats for the potential reader of this collection. It demands quite a lot of knowledge of Fifth Century Greek history, religion and society. It also includes a number of the author’s own poems, which are a bit hit and miss in quality. Other than that, I cannot recommend these stories highly enough.

Finally, the book examines Bacon's writings on such subjects as morals, politics, language, rhetoric, law, and history. Zagorin shows that Bacon was one of the great legal theorists of his day, an influential philosopher of language, and a penetrating historian.

Francis Bacon, one of the preeminent architects and prophets of the scientific revolution, is frequently acknowledged by philosophers and historians, says Zagorin, but he is almost as frequently misunderstood. This is not so much a biography as an attempt to portray the full range of his intellectual ambitions, which were nothing less than an often futuristic reworking of how humans should think about their natural and social environments. Drawing both on well-known published works such as Novum Organum and The Advancement of Learning as well as on lesser-known fragments, Zagorin (Rebels and Rulers, 1500-1660) attempts to reconstruct the thought and character of this true Renaissance man. Although he starts out with an extensive examination of Bacon's natural philosophy, he does not neglect Bacon's less celebrated investigations into jurisprudence or moral philosophy. In the public sphere, Bacon was, as Zagorin rather daintily puts it, "preeminently practical." In fact, Bacon, a fawning admirer of Machiavelli, took great pains to distance himself from his patron, the Earl of Essex, once the latter fell out of favor. It's not Bacon's finest moment and is sometimes skirted by biographers, but Zagorin generally treats Bacon's shortcomings with historical honesty. Even translated from the (usual) Latin, Bacon's works can still be difficult for modern readers. Unfortunately Zagorin's interpretation doesn't always help matters?witness his translation of Instauratio Magna as The Great Instauration. Also while the book begins enthusiastically, some repetition and lack of focus slow the pace of the last few chapters.

An erudite investigation into the work of the man regarded as the founder of the Scientific Revolution, this volume attempts to tie together Bacon's many writings, not only on science, but also on language, morals, politics, rhetoric, law, and history. From the outset, Zagorin, a professor of history emeritus at the University of Rochester, clearly states that it is not his intention to write a biography of Bacon, who has been the subject of numerous and recent biographies. However, he does provide a tantalizing glimpse of Bacon's personal life, as well as his flawed character. Much to his credit, Zagorin demythologizes Bacon by detailing his political ambitions and ruthless opportunism. Yet the glimpse is all too brief, and while this biographical introduction informs the rest of the book, Zagorin's later readings of Bacon would have benefited from a more integrated approach toward his life and his work. The bulk of the book is a thorough interpretation of that work and its impact. Zagorin illustrates in a sound and convincing manner how Bacon's philosophy and theory of science had a far-reaching effect on the growth of science. While Bacon made no scientific discoveries of his own, he did believe that science provided humankind with the instrument to master nature. Finally, at the end of the book, the author delves into Bacon's less known works in the humanities, proving that in these fields, too, Bacon was an original and often brilliant thinker. As a legal scholar, for instance, Bacon sought to devise a universal system that went beyond English common law. Though lucidly written, this book still requires a knowledge of Bacon's work as formidable as Zagorin's. A valuable work for the serious Bacon scholar, but not for the layperson. misses the boat

Zagorin has not added much to the great mystery of Francis Bacon. He has written a superficial understanding of the life and as a result left out many salient aspects that would have provided greater insight into Bacon's motivations and philosophy. Save your money on this one and buy a copy of Alfred Dodd's:"Francis Bacon's Personal Life Story"instead.

I've been buying the H-D calendar for my husband as a Christmas gift for at least 10 years. The pictures are beautiful. The only gripe I have is that for the last 5 years or so, the holes for hanging are a different distance apart every year. Now I have many holes in my wall in the same general area.

I love the David Blattel Harley Davidson calendar, we buy one every year and it hangs in the kitchen.
Great size, great photos.
I get allot of free calendars from work but no Harley ones, I'm glad they are available from Amazon because it's way more convenient than trying to find one in the shops.

About the Author
Milada Broukal has taught English for over thirty years in North America and Europe. She has worked in all areas of the field, including syllabus design, teacher training, classroom teaching, and has been Director of Study of her own school. She is the author of over 30 successful textbooks including the series "Weaving it Together, The Thomson Heinle Test Preparation Assistant" series, and the recently published "Check it Out!" series. Milada holds two Master's degrees.

This book `Optimizing Energy Efficiencies in industry', written by Dr.G.G.Rajan, who has over 36 years of experience in various phases of fertilizer and petroleum refineries, is an excellent approach to Energy Management of Industries.This is based on real life data of different energy parameters which must be considered for efficient performance management of major chemical industries.
The fact that the book originally published by Tata McGraw Hill, India in December 2001 has been republished by McGraw Hill, US adds merit to the book and the author as well.
This book covering a number of examples related to energy performance optimization of heaters, boilers, pumps, compressors, turbines, heat exchangers etc is an excellent asset for operations engineers, plant managers etc for taking equipment maintenance or shut down decisions as and when the energy efficiency of their major equipment falls below the specified limits. Such timely action could benefit the industry substantially.
The innovative approach adopted by the author is an excellent least cost tool to maintain energy efficiency of the system / sub system so as to minimize the operating cost and increase profit margin.
Methods to calculate energy efficiencies of individual equipment using efficiency curves , empirical relations, models and derived equations are also covered with appropriate examples . Using the statistic parameters, it is possible to monitor the energy efficiencies of the total system and generate an MIS report for corrective action by the managers in time and avert a costly failure and production loss.
