Not the best starting point

Part of my mission has been to purchase as many of the Shibari books as I can and read through them. This is written with British spelling which really should not be a problem for most. The book has a number of the basic Shibari ties that one would expect to see. The grammar in the book often is incorrect. It looks like this was run through a translate software product. This is still manageable for most people as one can figure out what was meant. The real issue is that the only pictures in the entire book are on the front and back cover. Given the weak descriptions, it is challenging to figure out what is meant. The descriptions on ties that I am already familiar with are challenging to understand.

I recently learned of Shibari, and this book I took out of curiosity. Here I encountered a lot of interesting information about the history of Shibari, but also on the current experience of these techniques "of erotic bondage." Everything I've read seems very exciting. For me, this book is very interesting and I recommend it to all who are interested in Shibari.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The Japanese bondage seduction techniques are so interesting and I think it is the best among other seduction techniques. This book is introducing the modern Shibari technique which is the best technique in Japan now and I really think those techniques would make sex is much more exciting than ever before.

According to the 2001 census, India has more than twenty million people suffering from various disabilities. However, disability law in India does not adequately address this issue. This book analyses the rights of the disabled people from the perspectives of equality and human rights. It argues that due to various disabilities these people are discriminated against and that, like any other citizen of the country, they have an equal share in its resources. Although the government over the years has made efforts to improve the lives of disabled people, much of it remained only symbolic in nature. The major step forward, however, came with the passing of the Persons with Disability (PWD) Act in 1995.

The volume critically reviews this Act, which is aimed to provide equal opportunities to the people with disabilities. It contends that though the Act has been in force since 1996, due to lack of clarity, often the civil society groups, judges, and even lawyers have found its provisions difficult to interpret. The author also discusses the role of private sector in providing social security to the disabled. The book addresses the critical issue of amending the disability law to bring it in compliance with the prevailing international legislation-the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CPRD).

This book will interest lawyers, medical practitioners, human rights activists, and policymakers. It will also be useful for teachers and researchers in the area of law, disability, and sociology.

When 15-year-old Finn's childhood friend Jersy returns to town, Finn is instantly attracted to him but says nothing as he gets together with her best friend, Audrey. Audrey is almost too good to be true, providing an endless supply of sympathy for Finn's complaints about her parents' fighting. Audrey is also Finn's cheerleader as Finn tries to work up courage to talk to her crush and deal with the aftermath of an ugly incident in which a popular senior tries to force Finn to perform a sexual act. When Audrey leaves town for the summer, Finn can no longer fight her attraction to Jersy, which turns out to be mutual. The connection built between Jersy and Finn doesn't feel strong enough to convince readers that Finn would betray Audrey, and the story of Finn's parents' breakup drags. Finn is easy to relate to, with her doubts and inner voice that critiques her every social interaction; however, as a romance and family drama, the story comes up short. Ages 14-up.

Grade 9 Up—Ninth-grader Finn's story begins in the middle of winter as her life continues to fall apart. Her parents are headed toward divorce, and she is trying to cope with her own private trauma from an incident that happened in September. Matters are made worse when her best friend, Audrey, is sent to live with relatives during the summer, leaving Audrey's boyfriend, Jersy, alone. As everyone else in Finn's life becomes distant, she and Jersy drift dangerously closer. This novel is difficult to read because the time line jumps forward erratically, with little transition between days and months. Only important events in Finn's life are narrated, which gives readers little insight into the characters' thoughts and actions and creates a jarring effect instead of a flowing narrative. An interesting plot will occasionally make up for a lack of character development, but that simply doesn't happen in this book.—Heather E. Miller, Homewood Public Library, AL

A beautiful story about the gray areas

Finn's life has been unraveling ever since that night in September, that party and Adam Porter. And of course, to add even more stress, her parents' relationship has been steadily deteriorating. Life is almost more than she can bear. It's a good thing her best friend Audrey is there for her, or Finn wouldn't know what to do. Thus, Finn ignores her tentative initial attraction to Beautiful Boy Jersy, her childhood friend from way back when, when Audrey expresses her interest. When Audrey goes away for the summer, Finn finds herself spending more time with Jersy. But being with Jersy, the only thing that feels right amidst the disaster in Finn's life, would mean betraying Audrey. How if Finn supposed to know what's right and wrong now?

Martin paints a vivid picture of the effects of damage on people's lives in One Lonely Degree. Protagonist Finn is the prime example of this. She is still reeling, months later, from an unpleasant experience that probably freaked her out more than harmed her but is nonetheless branded into her brain. She consequently withdraws into herself and she feels helpless when other things start to fall apart around her. Even though I've read many books that present similar problems as in One Lonely Degree, Martin seems so much more frank on the subject by including emotionally scarring experiences in multiple characters' lives. It just goes to say that in spite of damage happening, life goes on. Martin portrays this superbly through Finn's rocky struggle to overcome her past drama. Martin's characters are undeniably realistic, even the ones the reader only gets a few glimpses of. I like how she neither condemns nor condones any of the characters' actions, but rather leaves that to the reader's prerogative. One Lonely Degree is a beautifully written and moving story like life imitating art.

I recommend One Lonely Degree to readers who also liked Purge by Sarah Darer Littman, Cracked Up to Be by Courtney Summers, Everything Beautiful by Simmone Howell, and anything by Sarah Dessen or Deb Caletti. I can't wait to see more writing from Martin in I Know It's Over and novels to come.

"Freaky girls don't have good summer vacations."

I loved this book.

After a traumatic experience at a party, Finn hasn't been the same. Nothing has. Her world is slowly unraveling in ways she can't quite reconcile. Her parents' marriage is disintegrating and the reappearance of a childhood friend, Jersy, brings with it new and terrifying feelings made even more complicated by the fact that her best friend, Audrey, is dating him.

Audrey is the person Finn trusts most in the whole world--the person she'd be totally lost without--and Finn would never do anything to jeopardize that. So she steps back and tries to enjoy her rekindled friendship with Jersy as much as possible, knowing all the while it can't ever go to the next level. But when Audrey leaves town for the summer, Finn's world continues to collapse around her and she finds herself turning to Jersy more and more. Finn doesn't know who she is anymore, and what will happen next, but when she's with Jersy anything seems possible in the best kind of way...

But what about Audrey?

C.K. Kelly Martin is an amazing author. There was so much I admired in her extraordinary debut, I Know It's Over, which left me tangled up, inspired and empathetic toward a young man dealing with his first real heartbreak (made that much more complicated by an unexpected pregnancy). I have been looking foward to One Lonely Degree ever since, eager for a new and different story and hoping to come away just as tangled up and invested and inspired.

I'm happy to report that I did.

C.K. Kelly Martin has done it again.

When I cracked open One Lonely Degree, Finn's voice immediately swept me away, making the book impossible to put down for long periods at a time. I had an instant gut response to it that I can't quite shake even now, a day after closing the last page. We were total High School Attitude twins. Similar cynicism, same kind of resistance to change, same coping mechanisms, same kind of dependencies on other people. I've been Finn.

At the same time I've been Finn, I've also known Finn. Her codependency on her best friends, while justifiable, exhausted me on their behalf. I was relieved for both Audrey and Finn when Audrey left for the summer because as much as I admired the support system and small world they created for each other, they needed that space to grow. Finn needed to engage in her surroundings in a way that would enable her to recover from her trauma and Audrey's distance helped her do that.

Martin explores the theme of friendship with an expert hand. There's a certain sad nostalgia in Finn and Audrey's arc that made me remember all the friends I've distanced from in various ways. It's hard to describe, but I think we have all had these kind of friends at some point in our lives--people you need for a time, that help you and change you forever, but that you maybe can't have forever. This dynamic was presented in a way that was incredibly honest and incredibly true.

Jersy was a fantastic male lead. His relationship with Finn was electric and emotional. He is a somewhat reckless type, who observes, engages and takes the cards he's given with the kind of ease that makes it easy to understand why Finn was so drawn to him. Jersy was also believably flawed, with a complicated past of his own, and he and Finn dealt with their situation with utmost, well, reality.

That is one of my favourite things about Martin's writing. It's highly realistic YA fiction. One Lonely Degree is a pulls-no-punches slice of real life that no one will have to look too hard to see themselves in. At its core, this is a novel about change. Dealing with change. Adapting to it (or not). Surviving it. Holding things close. Keeping them. Learning from them. Letting them go. Taking what's left.

I think most of us have complicated relationships with change and I think the topic is delved into beautifully in this book. Martin knows how to pinpoint certain emotional truths and explore them in this incredible prose that makes the writer in me incredibly jealous.

I loved this book. It's at the top of my Favourite Reads of 2009 List. Read it. Now.

Thoughtful and entertaining

Ever since the disastrous party in September, Finn feels like she's been drifting away from everyone else, alone in the world as her parents' marriage breaks apart and she tries to get over that horrible night. The only person who knows about what happened is her best friend Audrey, and it is Audrey that helps her get through it all. Then, things change when Jersy, Finn's friend from childhood, moves back into town. Finn likes Jersy, but can't bring herself to admit it. Audrey also likes Jersy, so with Finn's approval, they start dating. Then comes summer...and Audrey is away. Left alone with Jersy as her only friend, Finn finds herself growing closer and closer to him. Finn doesn't want to betray Audrey...but when she's with Jersy, for the first time in months, everything just seems right.

CK Kelly Martin's second novel is fascinating as it follows Finn, who is still reeling from her traumatic experience and is completely dependent on her friend Audrey to get her through every day life. When Audrey leaves for the summer, Finn is forced to learn to stand on her own and find the strength to not only get over the party, but also deal with her parents' break-up, and that transformation is what makes this book so enjoyable. Finn learns that there is a chance at happiness after horrible experiences, and that the same bad things can happen to other people as well, not just her. Martin reveals the details of what happened at the party in September somewhat early on in the book instead of drawing it out for the suspense element, which is interesting and helpful as it lets readers understand why Finn is so timid and lonely. The characters in the novel are also refreshing in that none of them do the right thing every time, and they realistically do the selfish thing sometimes. The end is somewhat optimistic, but also realistic and will leave you wondering and dreaming about Jersy and Finn and Audrey beyond the final page.

Lee Karr is a devoted fan of the films of George A. Romero, in particular Day of the Dead, and has formed close friendships with many of the film’s cast and crew. Over the years he has contributed photos and liner notes for DVD and Blu-ray releases in both the U.S. and Japan for Day of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead. He has written for magazines including Horrorhound and Famous Monsters of Filmland, and previously interviewed George A. Romero for homepageofthedead.com. He lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is his first book.

Greg Nicotero is executive producer of AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead. An acclaimed actor, director and special-effects creator, his wildly inventive work has earned him legendary status within the horror genre. Since landing his break as assistant to Tom Savini on Day of the Dead, he's gone on to enjoy a long and illustrious career. He is the co-founder of Hollywood's prestigious KNB EFX Group and the winner of four Emmy Awards. He lives in Los Angeles, California, with his wife and two children.

every dead has its' day: great book!

the making of george romero's day of the dead by lee karr is wonderful. like many such books, this one is a labor of love, and the author even shares a picture of the birthday cake his mother made him for his fifteenth birthday with dr. tongue drawn in icing. exhaustively and lovingly researched, karr has been given access to the archives of greg nicotero, tom savini, and others. He puts together the evolution of day from george romero's epic first vision, to the small, more personal, darker and more beautiful, final product (i'm super glad we got this one).

as with any good making-of book, it's great fun to read about the goodwill of the cast and crew, its' inventiveness and tirelessness, and the hardships of working down in that mine. but there's also plenty of tales of conflict and disagreement, largely surrounding producer david small (who comes across as a little arrogant and self-important, and who clearly has no love--or respect--for romero), and director of photography michael gornick, who was in the midst of ending his working relationship with george romero, and not in overly amiable fashion. also, tom savini and his exploits are well-recorded, entertaining and telling.

filled with wonderful interviews--all the cast and crew, pretty much--incredible photographs (see a gaylen ross visiting the set), annotated filming schedule, and just endless amounts of day of the dead esoterica, lee karr's making of day of the dead is a fabulous, informative, entertaining examination of romero's wonderful, occasionally overlooked classic.

Worth reading if you are a fan

If you, like I, are a fan of this particular entry in the Romero zombie trilogy, then really, you have to add this book to your library. Most of the major "how they did it" points will be well-familiar already to most fans, but there are some new things to learn. The author takes you through a virtual day by day account of the filming (A "Diary of the Dead," if you will -- sorry, had to do it). Certain members of the cast and crew don't come off particularly well, and you'll finish the book somewhat surprised that this movie actually got made.

An enjoyable, if not in places particularly well-written account of, IMHO, the second-best movie of the trilogy (after NOTLD, of course). Again, if you are a fan of this movie, get this book.

A great book that exhaustively covers the filming of Day of the Dead. Full of interviews and behind the scenes info, and is quite possibly the best book I have read devoted to a single film. I wish Dawn of the Dead would get a similar treatment. This was truly outstanding and you can tell that Lee Karr really was working on this as a labor of love.

Nip Ill-Advised Plans in the Bud

I'm often asked to recommend my top leadership or management book. So, almost on autopilot, I hit play and blather the following:

"It's impossible to pick one leadership book. Everyone's at different levels of experience and need. That's why you need 20 management buckets--and dozens of niche leadership books. Blah...blah...blah."

Then (gulp) this past January I read and reviewed The Practical Drucker: Applying the Wisdom of the World's Greatest Management Thinker, by William A. Cohen. Here is Peter Drucker's response to that question: "the first systematic book on leadership--the Kyropaidaia by Xenophon, himself no mean leader of men--is still the best book on the subject."

Kyropaidaia (or Cyropaedia) was also known as Cyrus the Great (c. 580 - 529 B.C.). Cyrus founded the Persian Empire in the sixth century B.C. by uniting the Medes and the Persians, the two original Iranian tribes. His empire "extended from India to the Mediterranean Sea and was the most powerful state in the world until its conquest two centuries later by Alexander the Great."

What did Drucker see in this remarkable figure? "The great Persian's astonishing military successes and mild rule provided just the kind of raw material that Xenophon needed to fashion his portrait of a human paragon."

Fortunately, Larry Hedrick, a former air force officer and military historian, has edited Xenophon's work (c. 431 - 355 B.C.) and crafted a stunning, page-turner leadership treatise.

Five chapters in the Old Testament, Ezra 1-5, salute the generosity of Cyrus the Great for liberating the Jews from Babylon and for his generous gifts for the temple in Jerusalem. According to Hedrick, the Iranians regard Cyrus as "The Father," the Babylonians as "the Liberator," the Greeks as "The Law-Giver," and the Jews as "The Anointed of the Lord" (see Isaiah 45).

So why did Peter Drucker, the father of modern management, call Xenophon's book (written 100 years after Cyrus died) "the best book on leadership?"

And those are just samples from the first 33 pages. Cyrus the Great was a life-long learner--with unusual wisdom. "Let us remember our forefathers," he preached to his warriors, "but let us no longer exaggerate their virtues."

And this from Cyrus' father: "If you wish to be thought a good estate manager, or a good horseman, or a good physician, or a good flute player without really being one, just imagine all the tricks you have to invest just to keep up appearances. You might succeed at first, but in the end you're going to be exposed as an imposter."

So Xenophon (channeled in modern leadership/management lingo by Hedrick) paints a leadership masterpiece with both subtle tones and bold smash-face war scenes. Whew! (Not what I was expecting!)

Most of my reading colleagues tilt towards the skinny management books, not 295-page tomes. But this is neither.

This is readable. This is exciting. Leadership, coaching, mentoring, innovation, psychology, motivation, crisis management, social styles, cultural hiccups. Plus: stunning acts of kindness. And generosity--AMAZING generosity. The case studies in generosity (on and off the battlefield) will shock you. Wow. Here's Cyrus on his favorite subject:

"Allow me to pause and emphasize this general rule: Success always calls for greater generosity--though most people, lost in the darkness of their own egos, treat it as an occasion for greater greed."

There's wisdom and insight on almost every page. More subtitles:

Good read, but not exactly what I was looking for...

I rarely rate things with 3 stars, so I feel as though I must really explain myself.
This has been a great read. If you enjoyed Sun Tzu's "The Art of War," then you would probably like this. That being said, the two are written very differently.
I have read an few translations of Sun Tzu's works, but none is as easy to read as this copy of "Cyrus the Great." The editor, Larry Hedrick, took some liberties to make this book easier to read but also made it less true to the original text. Chief among these liberties is Hedrick re-writing the text in first person (from Cyrus's perspective, not Xenophon's). Hedrick notes this change in the beginning of the book, but this text was not advertised as being such.
I have enjoyed reading this book, but because it has been so altered, I feel the need to buy another copy which is truer to the original text. That is my reason for rating this book 3/5 stars.

Great story, Quick read

Great story, Quick read...
I don't know whether this is factual. I know that it is abridged and probably mistranslated over the centuries. These are minor issues regarding the validity of this book. Cyrus II lived. He created an empire. He released the Jews from their Babylonian captivity (the reggae tune on YouTube, "By the Rivers of Babylon," attests to the event as it paraphrases the psalm). I like best Hedrick's/Xenophon's characterization of Cyrus as a sympathetic, high touch/high task manager and leader. He comes across as humble, modest, caring and human. He is honest and circumspect in his calculations and manipulations. Managers in today's cynical business world would do well to emulate some of Cyrus's kinder traits.

An Emotional, Suspenseful, Brilliant Novel

The Lost Girls is an emotional roller-coaster of a book. I winced, I laughed, I smiled and I cried my eyes out. The plot is suspenseful, scary, harrowing and exciting. Mostly though, it is smart. While I read it, I kept thinking, "My goodness, the research this author must do to make a story so smart, so complex, so accurate." The details are intricate; there is never "just a story."

Besides the very smart and well-written plot, there are the emotional scenes, the gripping and well-developed characters, and the usual ambiguous feelings of wanting to finish it but not wanting it to be over. I hope the Lucy/Sean books are never over because I love these characters and having read all the books since Lucy was introduced back before her series, I feel like I've watched her grow up. Sean is my favorite character but I do love all the supporting characters. How I would love to be a Rogen or Kincaid or both.

Time felt like it dragged until this latest book by Allison Brennan was released and now, I've already finished it and have to wait months for the next one. At this point, I don't start to read an Allison Brennan book expecting to do anything but love it but I am still surprised each time by how much I love each book, how each manages to be even better than the last.

Another great read by Brennan

All the Lucy Kincaid novels are wonderfully wicked fast paced stories that never fail to engross and entertain the reader. I would suggest starting with the first Lucy Kincaid novel so you can follow the rich development of all the many fascinating characters that abound in these stories. Ms. Brennan has woven a wonderful tapestry between the Kincaid and Rogan clans that will have you turning pages until the wee hours of the night as both families fight against some of the world's worst deviants who prey on those unable to protect themselves. The subject matter can be horrific and appalling and take you places you'll wish you never knew about but interwoven with amazing characters so deeply concerned and committed to love and justice and each other that you'll be spellbound and always wanting more. Give this author a read and you'll find yourself going back for more! This voracious reader has already purchased the next book in this series due out next year.

Once again I knew I wouldn't be able to start this book without reading entirely at one time. Love, love this group of characters and their relationship to each other. Love Lucy and her strength . It was non stop movement from beginning to end. Wish I had the words Mrs. Brennan does to explain how much I enjoy reading her books. I know there are truly evil people in this world but there are also truly good and wonderful people to balance that evil. We all have strength we don't realize we have. Mrs Brennan shows this in her books which makes me return to read when she writes.
