Fixed broadband wireless: New multi-megabit "long-haul" to "last mile" solutions

Fixed broadband wireless systems give service providers and enterprises flexible, cost-effective ways to deliver, from "long-haul" to "last-mile", voice and Internet/data services at multi-megabit rates. Now, wireless infrastructure consultant Dr. Douglas Morais systematically introduces, with the aid of insightful examples, fixed broadband wireless for working professionals: its principles, design techniques, emerging standards, practical applications, and state-of-the-art commercial systems. Coverage includes:

  • Circuit-switched (PDH and SONET/SDH) and packet-switched (IP, ATM, Ethernet) signal formats
  • Fundamental digital communication theory, leading modulation techniques, and basic mathematical tools for digital transmission analysis
  • Microwave propagation, the structure of microwave links, diversity techniques for improving reliability, and the computation of link availability
  • Optimizing real-world performance: Reed-Solomon, Convolution and Turbo coding, Trellis coded modulation, adaptive equalization, cross-polarization interference cancellation, and automatic transmitter power control
  • Point-to-point system design in licensed and unlicensed frequency bands, including the use of spread spectrum techniques such as Wi-Fi's CCK modulation

PREFACE

The worldwide market for fixed broadband wireless systems, though substantial and growing, is a subset of a much larger market for broadband communications transmission systems. This broader market encompasses such technologies as digital subscriber line (DSL), coaxial cable systems, optical fiber systems, satellite systems and third generation (3G) mobile systems. The field of communication transmission is one of ever increasing complexity and sophistication. As a result, it is becoming more and more difficult to address in any detail advancements in specific areas while at the same time trying to cover the broader arena. Many excellent current texts deal with communications transmission and often touch on fixed broadband wireless. However, the author is unaware of any up-to-date publication addressed exclusively to fixed broadband wireless that provides a comprehensive coverage of the principles involved and the practical applications thereof. This text is intended to fill that void. It should be noted, however, that, despite this focus, much of the theoretical material presented is applicable to the emerging area of truly broadband portable and mobile wireless communications.

The material provided here is directed to industry professionals as well as academics. On the industry side, it should prove valuable to engineering managers, system engineers, design engineers, technicians and anyone who would benefit from a rounded understanding of fixed wireless technology in order to more effectively execute their job. On the academic side, it should provide the university student with a useful introduction to the theory of fixed wireless communication and the application thereof. It is assumed that the reader has had some previous exposure to the elementary concepts of electronics and communications. That said, the material is intentionally not rigorous so as to be friendly to a wide audience and in keeping with a desire to convey a somewhat high-level view of the technology. Mathematics, though clearly necessary for any meaningful study of the subject at hand, has been intentionally minimized. However, references are provided to allow the more inquisitive reader to explore the fundamentals in further detail. Numerous real-world examples are provided where appropriate to reinforce the practical side of the subject matter.

Chapter 1 is introductory in nature. It deals with the evolution of fixed broadband wireless, its primary areas of application, and its place in today's communications transmission landscape.

Chapter 2 describes the payload transported by fixed broadband wireless systems. This payload is all digital, typically originating from voice, video, or data sources, or a combination thereof. Though the term broadband is somewhat ill defined, here it is used to imply a payload bit rate of at least that of a T1 stream (i.e., 1.5 Megabits per second). Circuit switched signal formats such as PDH and SONET/SDH as well as packet switched formats such as IP, ATM, and Ethernet are reviewed.

Chapter 3 reviews some mathematical tools important for digital transmission analysis presented in later chapters.

Chapter 4 presents some of the fundamentals of digital communication theory. It then addresses, at an introductory level, modulation techniques, such as QPSK and QAM, that have proven to be the most popular in fixed broadband wireless systems.

Chapter 5 introduces the subject of microwave propagation. It describes the structure of a microwave link and the various propagation phenomena that impact system performance. It discusses how to compute link availability in the presence of these phenomena and considers diversity techniques to improve availability.

Chapter 6 addresses design techniques used to optimize performance of nondiversity (single transmitter/receiver) links in the presence of implementation imperfections and the propagation phenomena described in Chapter 5. Techniques covered include forward error correction ones such as Reed-Solomon coding, convolution coding, turbo coding, and trellis coded modulation. Also addressed are time domain and frequency domain adaptive equalization, cross-polarization interference cancellation, and automatic transmitter power control.

Chapter 7 describes point-to-point systems that operate in licensed frequency bands and that are therefore likely protected from harmful levels of direct, same frequency interference. These systems constitute by far the largest segment of the fixed broadband wireless market. Real-world examples of such systems are provided.

Chapter 8 also describes point-to-point systems but those that operate in unlicensed bands and are therefore subject to unregulated levels of direct interference. It discusses the use of spread spectrum techniques, including Wi-Fi's CCK modulation, to mitigate potential interference problems and provides an overview of a commercial product using such a technique.

Chapter 9 addresses point-to-multipoint and mesh structured systems in licensed and unlicensed bands. These systems are used primarily for "last mile" access. Though relatively new, such systems are receiving much attention and are projected to be deployed in significantly increasing quantities over the next several years. There are many state-of-the-art techniques incorporated in them, and this chapter covers the key ones, including OFDM, DS-CDMA, MIMO transmission, and adaptive beamforming. It also gives an overview of standards developed for these systems, including IEEE's 802.16/16a and ETSI's HIPERMAN, which are WiMAX supported, and ETSI's HIPERACCESS. Finally, key features of two commercial systems are outlined.

Like most modern digital-based technologies, fixed broadband wireless communications is in a constant state of evolution. However, throughout this evolution, certain principles remain fundamental to its realization. This text strives to set out those principles, as well as the latest realization techniques, in a tractable yet informative format.
