Even for $8.00 not a great book

Being a sign painter I am always on the lookout for font books, both old and new. I bought this book hoping to find some more great classical alphabets to add to my memory, what I found sadly was none of that. The, maybe 2, fonts I found are ones that are super similar to others in the normal industry used fonts, the rest are the style of font that you would barely use on anything, maybe a super stereotypical piece with no knowledge of design incorporated. I highly suggest finding a vintage font book or heck even a calligraphy book instead of this one. Spend a little more and get a LOT more.

Letter design reference book

This is a good reference book with a variety of alphabet and letter designs. It is useful as a supplement to more detailed instructional books which include a supply list, and recommend lettering pens, nips size, stroke sequence or ductus. The book selections are good for drawing and copying letters as a visual exercise.

About the Author

Mary Jo Hatch (PhD Stanford, 1985) is the C. Coleman McGehee Eminent Scholars Research Professor of Banking and Commerce, Emerita, at the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Copenhagen Business School, Visiting Professor Gothenburg University, and an International Research Fellow of the Centre for Corporate Reputation, Oxford University. Her research has been published in Harvard Business Review, California Management Review, Academy of Management Review, European Journal of Marketing, Human Relations, Journal of Management Inquiry, Strategic Organization, Administrative Science Quartely, and Organization. She co-authored The Three Faces of Leadership (Blackwell) with M. Kostera and A. Kozminski. She received the 2011 Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Management's Organization and Management Theory (OMT) Division.
Ann L. Cunliffe is currently Professor of Organization Studies at the University of Leeds in the UK. She has held positions at the University of New Mexico, California State University and the University of New Hampshire. She obtained her Master of Philosophy degree and Ph.D. from Lancaster University Management School. Recent publications in the field of leadership, sensemaking, reflexivity, and qualitative research methods are found in Human Relations, Organizational Research Methods and Management Learning. She was awarded the 2002 'Breaking the Frame Award' from the Journal ofManagement Inquiry for the article that best exemplifies a challenge to existing thought. Ann is currently co Editor-in-Chief of Management Learning, Consulting Editor for the International Journal of Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management, and a member of eight international journal Editorial Boards.

This is a really, really dense read. It takes a lot of concentration and thought to read through the chapters, but I think it's organized well, provides great information and is broken into great chapters with key terms.

Clear explanations of organization theory

This was required reading in a graduate level course in strategic communication. I had absolutely no knowledge of organization theory before I took the course, but I found this book easy to understand. It gives a basic overview of different theories of how organizations are structured. As an introduction to organization theory, this book is recommended.

About the Author

Her research has been funded by the Fulbright Commission and the Mellon Foundation, among others.

Rhetta Akamatsu lives in Marietta, Ga with her husband. She has previously written about ghosts and blues music. Her heritage is partly Irish, and it is possible that at least one ancestor was an indentured servant in the 1600's. Her interest in justice and human rights covers all people anywhere.

A critical story that needs to be read

This book tells how in the 1600 and 1700s the English made slaves of the Irish and shipped them in coffin ships to the Islands and the new American colony. These Irish had been disenfranchised of the lands and prevented from holding paid employment or educating their children and of course; practising their Catholic religion. The extreme racism of the British boarders on genocide and left me feeling really angry and awake!

As an Irish descendent I found this story riveting but the writing poor. There are many repetitions, the story jumps around rather than follow an historical time line. The referencing is poor which makes trust in the truth a little challenging.

Very emotional read

I am only a third of way through the book and I am emotionally drained. Much different picture of what happened then what we learned in social studies. I have been on the verge of crying a few times.

Just to let you know, I think this book was self published and I have found few misprints. I am not talking about the historical documents, but the narrative of author has a few mistakes (or the editor was sloppy).

Enjoying the book a lot, please get in on Kindle!

Do not waste your $$

Purchased hoping for more history on my Irish-slave ancestors. It reads like a seventh-grade research report (of which I have read many!). Repetitive & out-of-chronological order. Many typographical errors, no page numbers, & a non-alphabetical bibliography! It adds very few additional facts that are not available free online or in other books. "Diary of an Irish Slave Girl" (tho fiction) & "Hell or Barbados" are much better done.

Helped me discover some good contemporary writers I otherwise would not have noticed

I am Chinese and bilingual (English/Mandarin) and I like this book and the approach Penguin has taken for this Parallel Text series. I bought this book to read the short stories in Chinese. I wasn't sure if the English would help (unless there was a literary "flowery" sentence I couldn't understand). In the end, however, I found myself reading the Chinese version and completely ignoring the English version because (1) the English translation deliberately skips some sentences, so you don't get the full picture (caveat emptor!) and (2) the English translation is not as beautiful and full of meaning as the equivalent Chinese expression. I did not notice any Chinese grammatical errors at all. How would that be possible, since the Chinese version is the original text written by the authors? I did suspect, a couple of times, that the Chinese original text had been edited or cut in some mysterious way, but it wasn't enough to derail my reading experience. This book has helped me discover some good contemporary writers I otherwise would not have noticed.

This is a great pity as the first story is beautifully written

I have read only the first few pages, but have identified some incorrect use of characters, notably on page 4 which contains at least three errors. In line 4 the Chinese word “l�l�i” 历来 has been written incorrectly as the similarly pronounced 利来. In line 5, “bi�n” 变makes no sense, and should probably be “pi�n” 片. In line 9, the character 的 ( “de” ) in 把头发梳的乌亮 should be 得 (also pronounced “de”). Unless these errors occurred in the original, which seems unlikely, they may be the result of careless transcription of the text, as in each case the correct and incorrect characters sound identical or similar when pronounced. If so, it would be worth knowing how much of the book contains such errors. My rating is based just on my reading of the first few pages, but I resent such errors appearing in a text which would be used by many learners to improve their Chinese reading skills. This is a great pity as the first story is beautifully written. Perhaps a second edition will eliminate such errors?

Mandarin text has many grammatical errors

My wife (who speaks Mandarin natively) read this and tells me that the Mandarin text is packed with grammatical errors, to the point where it was difficult to read. Apparently not a good reference. Disappointing.
