a fascinating virtuoso of imagination and technique

The post-war avant-garde required an entire cadre of virtuosi to bring into the world the great complexities of innovations.In perticualr the creative focus on the solo unaccompanied work was an intense point of concern and interest. Part of this was labeled "the new virtuosity".And pieces owe their creation to the overwhelming performative skills,persistence and imagination of these soloists.There was not much precedent emamating from the vigours of modernity, in fact there was no unaccompanied work for the trombone or tuba, or french horn until well into the Twentieth century.These virtuosi are too numerous to mention, but certainly William O.Smith was the first to explore multiphonics on the Bb Clarinet in the early Sixties, Bertram Turetsky also found the hidden timbres in the contrabass, almost like a sonic archeologist picking and scraping through the historical baggage of their instruments. Vinko Globokar(avant-garde, and Albert Magelsdorff(free jazz) in Europe both on trombone as well, but their counterpart here in the States was Stuart Dempster, an incredible virtuoso. Composers wrote for him as no other,once they heard him play.He had a real innate gift for the avant-garde, I recall him crawling around the floor of the stage striking matches to create extended sounds in John Cage's "Solo for Sliding Trombone",disassembling the trombone blowing into all the remaining tubes to great mysterious affect. He had premiered dozens of works throughout the Sixties and Seventies by distinguished American composers, Ben Johnnston, Robert Erikson, Jacob Druckman, John Cage, and Luciano Berio his Sequenza #5 which was the high water mark, a piece that today is a standard staple in the literature. Dempster solidifies all this experience in this book actually the first, the premiere work to discuss,multiphonics(singing and playing simulataneously),muting, and extended techniques for the trombone. This instrument has come light years transcending its cumbersome constitution as inhabiting the backwalls of the orchestral placement to enter for a choral like chord. Hunkle Ted da Fireman

My son & I grabbed this book from the library shelves expecting Lola & Charlie, of "I will Never not ever Never eat a tomato".

'My Uncle is a Hunkle' is targeted at an older group than the Lola books, with more intricate plot lines and convoluted happenings.

Or perhaps Lauren Child has distilled her writing since the Clarice Bean books.

Amusing, and some of the sentences constructions were fun to rattle off, but a lot more to read, without the clean illustrative lines.

Plot as follows:
Large family with many children of varying ages, mother is called away, dad is called away, desperate mother must rely on unruly (fireman) brother to babysit.

Kids have wacky and crazy time, which culminates in the debacle to which mother arrives home to.
Clarice Bean & fireman get on 'like a house on fire'.

The text is decorative with lots of spirals and swirls, and collage used througout the pages to illustrate backgrounds, balls and guinea pigs.

Recommended for ages 4-5 or at any point where you don't need to read it to them. I had great difficulty deciding on 3 or 4 stars, eventually granting 4, as it not a BAD book, just not as memorable as other by this author.

For ages 3-5, "I will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato" by Lauren Child highly recommended

Fab book!

My daughter and I simply adore this UK version! We bought CB Guess who's Babysitting (which is the US version) not knowing they were the same books, but we didn't mind. The book arrived faster than expected (was supposed to take 3 weeks) know now what I know about the book I would but the UK version from the UK all over again! Thank you!!!

Chad Troftgruben

Chad Troftgruben is a freelance media designer who has been working with Flash, Anime Studio, and other various software for a number of years. By applying methods from his cartoon animation and filmmaking background, Chad provides a simplistic yet creative approach to each lesson he teaches. Beginning in 1996 with a program called Microsoft's 3D Movie Maker, Chad cut his teeth on the basics of animation, eventually graduating to Flash in 2002 and then Anime Studio in 2010. Liveaction filmmaking was also a big part of Chad's life as he made short films with his friends throughout high school and college. In 2007, Chad started providing free online video tutorials on Flash and other software. Since then, his tutorials have been viewed by millions of people, including entrepreneurs, teachers, students, and many others. In 2010, Chad was hired by LearnKey to present their Flash CS5 learning series, which was a sixhour course detailing the entire feature set of the software. Since then, he has been keeping busy with various animation and tutorial projects, such as creating Smith Micro's official Anime Studio 10 tutorial series and authoring for Virtual Training Company.

Anime Me!

This book is a winner! I was trying to learn Anime Studio by watching the training videos. They don't show you the basics. Chad's book starts at the beginning and delivers with all content. I am using the book along with the videos (Chad also does the videos) and know that I am really learning this software. You can't go wrong buying this great learning resource.

for arbitrary styles of cartoons

Don't take the 'anime' in the title too literally. It is not restricted to the anime style of cartoons from Japan. Rather, Anime Studio is a simple framework within which to draw most any style of cartoons. The book can be used as a guide for the rank beginner in the basics. From writing down a first draft, which the text warns you is likely to be terrible, to making a storyboard. And these days, to providing audio sound track if your characters will speak.

So it has to be noted that the cartoons here are typically not destined for celluloid, as in the 20th century. But more often meant for display in a web page. A major attraction is that the book shows how you as a beginner can affordably put together a professional looking composition.

Anime Studio is stuffed with many easily learnt tools accessed via a rich GUI. Drawing of figures has been made as simple as perhaps possible.

If you come from a background in graphics, especially with Photoshop, then many concepts will be familiar. Including the idea of layers. Anime Studio fully supports layers, with specialised tools like Transform Layer and Follow Path. Great time savers, and that is really what layering is all about.

But the most important aspect of Anime Studio might be bone animation. So instead of a character being a raw set of pixels, it is a set of graphics with an underlying skeleton. By manipulating its bones, you can rapidly and intuitively animate the character. Looks easy to use.

Great easy to understand book

I have always enjoyed and learned from Chad's Anime Studio video tutorials. So, I was very excited when I found out that he had written a book on how to use the animation software so I ordered it immediately. The book is very well written and is a wealth of information on how to use Anime Studio animation software. This book is a must-have for anyone wanting an easy to understand manual for Anime Studio.

I Put The Pepper In The Pepper Pot!

The story
This book is set around a farming family, Papa Joe, Mama Sue, Sam, Toby and Jane. One day they learned that rich Aunt Tootie was coming for dinner so the family set out to clean up the house, the yard, do the laundry but most importantly, first start to make the stew. "We may be poor said Mama Sue. But we can cook up a hearty stew as good as Tooties ever tasted."
While the family was doing the chores and the stew was cooking, Mama Sue remembered it needed some pepper. One by one she asked each family member to add a pinch of pepper, but each one was busy with his or her chores.
However, as each one finished a chore, he or she went in and put in a pinch of pepper. Of course, Mama Sue didn't know that so when she was done with her chores she added 4 pinches to make it "hearty."
Aunt Tootie came and was given the best chair and the plate without the crack and waited for her to taste what they thought would be a delicious stew. Of course it wasn't and in the way of "Who put the cookie in the cookie jar?" She asked, "Who put the pepper in the pot?" and of course each one answered "I put the pepper in the pot!"
Everyone got a good laugh out of it once they realized what had happened and much to the family's surprise Aunt Tootie offered to make an omelet - luckily there was no more pepper in the house!
The illustrations:
The pictures are colorful and adorable. There is a lot going on in each picture showing what the family is doing. We see each family member doing their chores and putting in pinches of pepper. The pictures are simple but detailed at the same time. They are the kind of pictures that children want to look at for a long time taking in each thing they see.
What the children thought:
I read this book to first graders primarily and they love it. Do you like to hear children laugh. This book will make them laugh and giggle. It is really very cute and very funny. It is a good starting to read book with simple words such as pot, water, chores, clothes, and clean.
To make a lesson out of it, we talk about the chores they do around the house and that usually begins a whole discussion of chores!
But Wait There is more to this book:
1. There are 2 pages on "Food Funnies" with questions like "What do you call a chicken from outer space?" The answer: An eggs-traterrestrial. The children love doing these riddles and end up thinking up their own, of course.
2. There are 4 excellent pages on "Safety rules for kids in the kitchen." The children are taught what to do before they start cooking, while they are cooking, what to do when they finish cooking, and important things to remember.
This chapter is an excellent way to end a funny book. It is a serious discussion, but the children don't mind. They enjoy sharing what they know about kitchen safety and how they help in the kitchen - what they can and cannot do. I often have them sit in a circle and go around the room talking about kitchen safety if they want.
3. The last chapter is The Usborne Round the World Cookbook with a recipe from Latin America, Japan and India. They are simple recipes that young children can help you make and for the children on the older end of the age range, with supervision, they can make a Cucumber raita themselves.
My thoughts:
I really like this book and would have it in my house if my children were small. It is a book that you can read over and over again as well as having practical information in it.

Delightful!

What a delightful story about a family and their many preparations for an aunt who is coming to visit! The family joins together in their efforts to make everything perfect for their special visitor. When the mother is too busy to do it herself, she asks her family, one person at a time, to add some pepper to the pot of stew. When each of them say they can't, she asks yet another to put pepper in the stew. Eventually, when they each find the time, the all add a little pepper, some more than others. Unbeknownst to each other, they have inadvertantly added so much pepper that the stew is rendered inedible. The family all has a good laugh over it, and Aunt Tootie offers to make her famous omelettes for dinner. When she asks for the pepper so she can add it to her omelettes, everyone gets a good laugh, because they realize they are all out of pepper.

This book is skillfully written with delightful illustrations. - Bravo!

Pepper Everywhere!

When I was younger, I loved this book! My parents at bedtime had to hide it from me, so I would not turn on the light and begin to read it again! It was one of my first books I learned to read. I still have it and I enjoy reading it now to my two year old brother. Who Put the Pepper In The Pot? Is a great classic in my family, and a great beginner book.
